Kick your week off with #GooglePayoutsForAll! What would YOU do with the $135 million Google used to reward sexual harassers? Fixing the wage (AND LEVEL) gap for women of color would be a great start 🌈
$135M could have subsidized construction of affordable homes protecting 1,100 low income families in San Jose from coming rent hikes of Google’s planned mega-campus. Instead they paid off abusers. #GooglePayoutsForAll
$135M could house the entire homeless population of San Francisco for nine months. Instead, Google used it to pay off two executives who sexually assaulted and harassed their colleagues. #GooglePayoutsForAll
This fight is happening in the same landscape where teacher strike waves have been rolling across the nation for the past year, from West Virginia to California.
Incidentally, the West Virginia teacher strike was illegal under state law.

Cafeteria workers at Google and other tech companies, paid much less than software engineers, many of who organized with their coworkers for legal union protection, are also being pushed into forced arbitration.
Now, let's take an even broader view.

We wanted to take some time to dive deeper into this. A lot of people are really agitated around Google's actions, as we all should be, but this is also a good opportunity to take a look at some of the broader context.
Gig economy companies like Instacart automate skimming tips from workers they call contractors. If you use these services, tip in cash; if you're a programmer employed by these companies, organize so you don't help the boss steal from your fellow workers.

"You start with a single issue, and my issue was working conditions. You start with a single issue and people start to say, “Oh, it’s not me. It’s not my fault. I didn’t do that. It’s happening to other people.” And then it can go anyplace."

So often these "contractors" are really full-time employees that employers are purposefully miscategorizing as contractors to avoid paying benefits, divide the workforce, and save a quick buck.
Oh and by "save a quick buck" we mean conduct wage theft.
"After 20 Facebook subcontractors demanded better working conditions, they’re being told to accept a counter-offer from their company by Friday afternoon – or lose their jobs."
This is a story of inspiring solidarity against heartless management abuse.

Follow #ContractWorkerStories. We full-time tech workers need to face what is happening within our own offices. The #GoogleWalkout isn't over until ALL demands are met for ALL workers - see you in 2019 🔥
When we organize, we know not to rely on the current high status of a small subset of programmers. We also know they'll try dividing workers by nation, exploiting workers more in some countries while stoking xenophobia in others. This knowledge is power.
