Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stood on CNBC Tuesday and pronounced the K-shaped economy over, like a man waking up and deciding gravity had been cancelled. "I got sick of hearing about this K-shaped economy," he said. "I can say here, definitively, the K-shaped economy is over."

The economy, he claims, is now a "C" — the lower end of wage earners "finally calling it back" like it's a game of Marco Polo with the rich. His evidence: wages for the lowest quartile of full-time workers grew 5.5% year over year. The Treasury Department declined to say which wage data he was referencing.

That's the tell. Because the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's data — which includes hourly and part-time workers — shows the lowest earners have seen the *smallest* gains since late 2024. And since 2021, spending among the top 40% of earners grew fastest while the bottom quintile grew slowest.

Three months before midterms, Bessent isn't reading the economy. He's reading the polls. He's sick of hearing about it. The data is sick of him.

Today, the headlines have faded, and many people no longer remember the man who risked everything for complete strangers. But courage like James Shaw Jr.'s should never be forgotten.
