“I don’t know what you want me to say.”
“Ideally, I would like you to tell me who has been so cruel to you in the past as to make you think that you can trust nobody.” Warden returned to his seat. “But I know you will not tell me that.”
“Do you mind it?” I asked softly. “Being linked to me?”
The silence rang with something I recognized.
“No.” His voice was a shadow. “It roots me again. You remind me what it is to have a home.”
‘I always want you with me,’ he said. ‘But remember what I told you in the chandlery.’
I thought back. ‘Our lifelines will meet when the æther sees fit?’
‘Yes.’ He interlinked our fingers.
I had made the mistake of dreamwalking into a Buzzer once before, and had only survived because Arcturus had used the golden cord to pull me out of its dreamscape. I never meant to do that again, but I could still play my part. This time, I would be his bodyguard.
I had seen him making coffee in the mornings, leaving the bathroom with wet hair, reading books and watching films. I had slept in his arms. To me, he was half a step from human.
‘You look deep in thought. No regrets?’
‘Never. I was only reflecting.’
‘On last night?’
‘On every night since I first saw you.’ He rested his forehead on mine. ‘Would you care for some coffee?’
I kissed him. ‘You always know what to say.’
‘I’m still glad we met.’ I shut my eyes. ‘And I would do it all again.’
Arcturus gathered me to his chest, shielding as much of me as he could. I pressed the last of my knives into his grasp.
“Learning a duet entails time. And patience. Calls for us to move as one.” He found a sensitive place at the back of my thigh, and I breathed his name. “I want you to show me where to touch you. I want to know how to make your body sing.”
‘You were with him while I was in there,’ I said. ‘Did he seem upset?’
‘You know what they’re like. So hard to read, but … Paige, I think he was devastated.’
