Written by the very unbiased author of Unpatriotic Civics, a textbook designed to fulfill Ohio’s civics requirement while framing the Declaration as a product of “slavery and imperial panic,” ratification as “class struggle,” and Adam Smith as a critic of capitalism
Opinion: Ohio has put $59 million into civics institutes at five public universities. Now a new bill would give their directors “sole and exclusive authority” over civics courses statewide. The author argues this is a new front in curriculum politics. https://t.co/G7ZblZuMVI
@NoahSenthil These programs often have a more pluralistic curricula than they’re given credit for. Take UNC’s civic center’s “Seeking a Just Life” course which assigns Plato, Nietzsche, and Marx. A promising basis for intellectual diversity!
@weRessential Well said. The fierce pushback against Civic Centers just proves how vital they actually are for restoring real, open debate to higher ed!
The humanities’ greatest loss may just be the promising young scholars that leave academia rather than compromise their research to meet the prevailing identity-focused priorities
@McCormickProf ‼️
“Identity vocabulary has grown at approximately 5-8% per year after accounting for institutional differences — the fastest rate of any of the five thematic categories, implying a doubling of Identity frequency every 8-12 years.”
Important to remind oneself that the consistency of "truth-seeking" language in the humanities is relative to the researcher! Uncovering the “truth” about the evils of the West still counts as "truth" to an NLP algorithm.
It's no secret that there is a crisis in the humanities in U.S. higher education. The American Academy of Sciences and Letters has done a great service in diagnosing the crisis in this important new report by a team of scholars led by Josiah Ober of Stanford.
