My girlfriend is showing me excerpts from a musical adaptation of The Odyssey called Epic: the Musical, and I can’t comprehend someone taking this shit seriously
the reactions to this is exactly why we have so much fucking junk. no one knows how to upcycle anymore. everything’s gotta be new and single use and if you don’t use a product for exactly what its intended purpose is, then you get scrutinised
Btw. the people wondering why the sirens weren’t seducing sailors, why Paris & Achilles weren’t in the sacking of Troy, why there were no torches for Scylla. It is wild how much people’s knowledge of the story comes from pop culture, especially when trying to critique the film
very funny that after all the “Emily Wilson is going to longhouse Western Civ with her woke Odyssey”, Emily Wilson herself is like “yeah, a bit too much ‘healing trauma’ and not enough ‘relishing in the blood of your enemies”
the movie gave way less focus and screentime to the women compared to the source material and weakened all their characters at the same time so everytime someone says something like this i am genuinely confused
the “harry potter adult” has been discussed at length, which has not been unwarranted. however are we ready to discuss the “percy jackson adult” that became a hellenist due to their interest in those books as a tween?
So many people are mistaking EtM plot points for real mythology... In the Odyssey
- Odysseus doesn't kill Astyanax
- Odysseus doesn't mix lotus in Polyphemus' wine *
- Aeolus isn't a god
- There are no six torches in Scylla's lair
- Antinous doesn't plan to rape Penelope *
I think a lot of people fail to understand that Greek gods were part of a living religion spanning thousands of years. People who worshipped them genuinely believed in them. Especially with mythical heroes. Odysseus would believe in the gods because his wife is daughter to one.
I didn’t like the very obvious Christian view on the Greek gods in The Odyssey, it made the story way less recognizable. Greek gods communicated with the humans, walked amongst them and even had children with them; Odyssey itself is surrounded by gods.
we cant have odyssey adaptations written by men anymore because they all wanna turn odysseus into a self insert which means he cant actually be himself because odysseus doesnt fit modern standards of morality or masculinity so they have to change him to feel good abt it
Y’all act like trans men carry the same toxic standard as cıs men, yet also criticize the validity of trans men when they REJECT the standards cıs men put in place. 🫠🫠
something i notice abt a lot of greek mythology retellings is that they looooove their exploitative graphic scenes of rape depictions of female characters who did not suffer from this kind of violence in the source material
