Immigration is the main driver of housing demand in both Ireland and Spain. It is long past time government slowed the pace of worker and student visa issuance to ease housing demand growth. It should not be controversial to say demand needs to managed, and it is certainly not anti-immigration never mind anti-immigrant.
Christian extremism to RTE is anyone who believes the Nicene Creed, regularly receives the sacraments of the Catholic Church and says a daily rosary. For some context, when I was a kid, that was the majority of families in my part of the rural West of Ireland. That young people, and yes, young men in particular, are starting to come back to the ‘Faith of our fathers’ is probably alarming them, this wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
David Quinn has had an article published in the Wall Street Journal entitled “Nuns Are The New Stock Villains in Irish Cinema.” [https://t.co/v9Lflcu55M]
In this excellent short piece, he gives a succinct account of the facts relating to the Tuam Children’s Home—not the speculation, not the legends—the facts, most of which, I suspect, will come as a surprise to US readers and to not a few Irish readers also.
Among other things, he notes that Alice Litster, a state inspector (an Anglican and a socialist) who visited the home in the 1940s, reported that the nuns were ‘careful and attentive’ towards the children and that it was Galway County Council rather than the nuns who were to blame for the death rate in not providing the nuns with sufficient means to control the spread of disease. Of course, it’s difficult to write a gripping film based on such mundane facts, which would require the film makers to cast a drab County Council in the role of the villains of the piece.
Towards the end of his article, Quinn notes: : A state-ordered dig at the grounds of the home is currently under way. There are bodies in an underground structure. We don’t yet know how many, and we may never know who put them in there. But so far, the dig has found 99 bodies buried at the site, not in the structure. Notably, all are in coffins, something the movie doesn’t tell its audience.”

What a ignorant ill mannered https://t.co/kiYmrpMUa8 appearance before an Oireachtas Committee does not confer the right on its members to harangue or seek to apply the rules of cross examination on a witness.Had I been those two doctors I would have walked out.
Who would ever voluntarily appear before an Oireachtas Committee? They’re increasingly like show trials with publicity-mad backbenchers craving clips for social media.
@paulmurphy_TD It’s great your supporting the Catholics of NI, maybe you could go to Nigeria and support the Catholics who are being killed by the Muslims.
According to recent polls, just 2% of people consider Gaza a priority. Imagine if the print media, social media and RTÉ gave as much attention to the 47% worried about the cost of living, the 42% worried about housing and the 25% worried about immigration as they have given to Gaza, the campaign to boycott Ed Sheeran and one football match over the past two weeks.
It is a shame that so much of our media appears more concerned with problems elsewhere in the world than with the serious issues affecting the everyday lives of people here in Ireland.
A brilliant analysis. Ireland is under the spotlight now.
Well done the 'stop the game' hypocritical bigots. You just scored a massive own goal.

So touching:
Ireland soccer team wears black ribbons and refuse to shake the hands of the Israeli team members as they identify with Gaza.
But-
Last month, Ireland’s cricket team had no trouble whatsoever to play and shake the hands of Afghanistan’s cricket team.
As a reminder, approximately 200,000 people were killed in Afghanistan in the last war. Since Taliban took over the country in 2021, women’s rights are non existent!
Hypocrisy at its best!
Football Association Ireland president, Paul Cooke, has come out to condemn the bias in Irish media with respect to yesterday’s match.
It has been three years of obsessive and wholly unethically biased reporting by the Irish media establishment regarding Israel. Finally someone is publicly standing up to them.
‘I thought journalists were meant to be balanced and reflect two sides of an opinion. I haven't seen that.’
Well said.
Pathetic Conor.
Ireland played a fantastic match, despite the enormous pressure placed on them by the woke, antisemitic Leftist Irish press corp. Other than their sop of obedience to the baying mob with their black armbands and bowed heads, they faced down the bully boy "paddystinians", the press hacks and a great many politicians and went out on the pitch and did their job.
It was bad enough that ye deprived Irish fans of the chance to travel to Tel-Aviv, or to the Aviva Stadium, but to try and deprive Ireland of 6 points was a dreadful display of bullying and strong-arming. You lot and @rte have embarrassed yourselves greatly.
I'm mortified for you!
Brenda Power is a rare voice of moral clarity amongst the Irish commentariat on this issue. In under a minute she eviscerates Ireland’s hypocrisy.
‘There wasn’t a single peep of protest to the Irish cricket team voluntarily playing Afghanistan last month, where women are treated worse than battery chickens. It is the most extreme humanitarian crisis in the world right now, as far as I can see, the gender apartheid in Afghanistan. Not a word of protest.’
‘Where was your indignation when we played [Afghanistan]? England wouldn’t play them, South Africa wouldn’t play them, New Zealand wouldn’t play them. The great humanitarians in Ireland had absolutely no difficulty. We’re hypocrites.’
Brendan O’ Neill sums up all the discussion surrounding Israel vs Ireland on Sunday night.
Every word. Nailed it.
“There is no way to explain this mania and hypocrisy…”

Second appearance on the main nightly TV news and again it is about the only Jewish majority state in the world. I don’t like to focus on individuals, but the Taoiseach needs to cop on. Our leader needs to focus on Ireland’s national interests, not the obsessions of a small minority about one distant conflict of many in the world.
Cardinal Ernest Simoni visited Ireland this week as a guest of @ireland_acn. He was sentenced to hard labour by the communist government of Albania in 1963 and was only released in 1990. Made a cardinal by Pope France in 2016, he is a living martyr.
