Before the Canadian Parliament today on the reported torture of #AndyLi and the state-sponsored persecution of #JimmyLai, facilitated by corrupt HK prosecutors Anthony Chau and Ivan Cheung.
This is how an authoritarian can create perverse incentives for destroying the criminal justice system.
The promotion of Mr Chau as the next Hong Kong Director of Public Prosecutions sends a really bad signal to the Department of Justice’s entire Prosecution Division.
By promoting the leading and by far the most relentless of National Security cases prosecutors, the HK authorities is telling all full time prosecutors that if they want career prospects in the DoJ, it is no longer good enough to be nailing fraudsters, murderers, rapists, gangsters and drug traffickers. Instead, one must debase and taint oneself by taking on the task of political persecution. And even trying to do no more than the bare minimum in this regard to keep one’s career won’t do - one must do it with gusto and glee as Mr Chau has done throughout.

Joshua Wong is facing up to life in PRISON. His only real “crime” was having the courage to stand up for his God-given rights in Communist controlled Hong Kong.
This is wrong. The oppression needs to end. Joshua must be RELEASED.
In all, at least 42 messages were thrown on 2 Oct 2024 & 16 on 5 Dec 2025.
Now, 55 convictions for #sedition in HK; 0 acquittals; a total of 1,945 #PoliticalPrisoners in #HongKong since 9 Jun 2019; btw 278 & 554 currently behind bars.
A 55yo's pled guilty to 2 counts of #sedition for throwing messages out of his apartment like "Liberate HK, don't vote" & "Give me back HK; HK, add oil!" A pro-CCP District Councillor found them & called the police. He was arrested Apr 21. Remanded in custody; sentencing Jun 9.
This is heartbreaking and devastating and illustrates the cruelty and vindictiveness of the #HongKong#CCP regime
I stand in solidarity with @AnnaKwokFY and call on the Hong Kong authorities to release her father immediately
Outrageous. #HongKong authorities are harassing families to silence dissent. They can’t get us, so they get our loved ones.
We can’t normalize this #TransnationalRepression. The U.S. must respond w/ real consequences, and we must stand in solidarity w/ @annakwokfy & her family.
As Jimmy Lai sits in prison for dissent, we should all be demanding his immediate release - and asking why Canada would sign a journalist deal with the very regime that put him there. WATCH:
Jimmy Lai stood up for the freedom from government repression and overreach – in Hong Kong, in China, and around the world. His sentencing to 20 years in a Chinese prison is a tragedy for liberty and freedom.
Hong Kong just convicted Kwok Yin-sang, the father of US-based human rights activist @AnnaKwokFY, on bogus charges. Unable to silence Anna in the US, the Hong Kong government is punishing her family instead, treating her father as a hostage to intimidate her and others. It is a cruel and barbaric act against a father and his courageous daughter.
This is transnational repression, full stop. If it goes unanswered, Beijing and its Hong Kong proxies will keep doing it. The US and other democracies should respond, including by sanctioning the officials responsible and advancing the HKETO Certification Act to shut down Hong Kong’s espionage centers in the US.
Today, my father was convicted simply for being my father.
This is how the Hong Kong government retaliates against me and my pro-democracy advocacy. This is hostage taking. This is transnational repression.
This is a naive, foolish and deeply dangerous position to be in and @MarkJCarney is making a huge mistake by allying with one of the most serious threats to the free world
