After my two-year detour into agentic AI, and my deep .NET background, I find it a perfect match for today's evolution of .NET and serving heavy AI workloads. The intersection of AI with low-level programming and hardware-aware algorithms is a great place to be. Not to mention AI-assisted work and engineering is already deep in my heart.

New Year's Eve Consulting story aka how we made $ nice figure in a week.

Few years back, around Dec 20'th, right before we make a pause Christmas break, I got quick call.

Typical consulting case:

C(ustoemr): here's a problem, can you do it?
Me: Sure we do.
C(ustomer): OK, by Dec 30'th.
Me: Uhmm,... give me 5 minutes.

The thing is - Dubai Mall was launching some new services, and at one of vendors... didn't delivered. So, they called us (I run a company back then)

Why us?

We weren't known for this particular thing, but they knew one thing. When we promised something, we always delivered.

Lesson #1: be known for something, not necessary tech.

The "THING" to be done was simple. You all know it. When you connect to the free WiFi, there is a captive portal. Easy.
Not so.

There were some requirements:
- integration with WiFi system, but that was simple
- UX has to be nice, sleek and run on everything
- User experience has to be smooth
- And it has to integrate with customer profile... so user will not be bother again.

All of above were just technicality. The thing is, we had to do it by Dec 30'st. WiFi service launch was set for New Year's Eve.
Oh, and scale. There is up to million people visiting Dubai Mall on New Year's Eve and it has to handle all of them.

So.. technically, we knew it can be done. The timing... it was tricky, as our team was not in Dubai.

So.. we assembled a team to work over Christmas on development, we got in touch with our fav designers agency, and convince their founder to spend Xmas and New Year's in Dubai with his girlfriend.
To of our founding team... jumped on a flight and ... Dubai for Christmas.

Lesson #2: Skin in the game. If you are founder, and you want team to pull extra mile, be ready to pull it yourself.

Cutting story short... we did it.

I worked with team here and also remotely, between family time on Xmas. My co-founders were handling things on-site, plus.. they were running around in Dubai Mall, using devices in the electronic shops to test the site and design.

And we shipped.

Between the call on Dec 20'th and Dec 30'thwe:
- build a proposal
- assembled a team and send them on-site
- build the app from the scratch, with integrations
- build few design (yeah, stakeholders) for all the possible form factors :)
- deployed it
- tested it (running and borrowing devices from the displays :) )

Lesson #3: if there is a will, there's a way. The hardest part is always people, then integration. Tech in such cases is usually the simplest one.

On New Year's Eve it was victory lap for customer, laps around the Mall for our team who was still testing it, and constant monitoring of telemetry if and where things are breaking (a lot of integrations).

The twist... at the end, it turned out, that customer have not read the proposal's last page.

Yeah... price 🤣.
But they did covered it.

Price was fair, we weren't ripping anyone off. It had some premium because of timing and making it worth to skip Xmas and NYE for a team of several people.

If you will be in Dubai Mall this evening, maybe you still will be going through code we wrote back then (I doubt it)
