Indian democracy is a patient teacher, but it will tolerate arrogance only up to a point, as Modi has realized to his dismay. He had Indira Gandhi's example before him, but he has never been a good student of democracy, especially federal democracy, Indian style.

Jat-Muslim unity was on while agitation was at its peak, but now Jats might return to the BJP. In Punjab, BJP has nothing to lose and its strategy is to wean Sikhs away from Congress. The repeal will help implementing this strategy. Amrinder Singh should be very happy.

A part of me is happy the repeal of farm laws is a defeat for the BJP, another part is cautioning it will be foolish to underestimate Modi & co. The Western UP Jats are hardly pro-Muslim and in the last elections, more than 90% of them voted for the BJP.

Hindutva fanatics are cheap scoundrels. They are circulating a letter written by Nehru to the British Monarch and aver that 1947 was a sham. Until 1950 India was a dominion and technically its people were subjects of the King. Nehru had to follow the convetion of those times.
