Private legal practitioner Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie describes the procedures used by Parliament in passing the constitutional amendment bill as 'a comedy of errors.'

I thought I could take a short break from Sierra Leone, only to find myself in Tampa, Florida,a place that kept reminding me of what Sierra Leone could be if we were not so busy consolidating power instead of investing in the development of our country.
But I took some comfort in the thought that perhaps we have discovered something uniquely Sierra Leonean to attract tourists: constitutional tourism.
After all, we may just have pioneered a new method of constitutional amendment—one where the Speaker interprets the Constitution, declares a Bill passed on the strength of that interpretation, insists that his ruling is final, and then refers the very constitutional question underlying that interpretation to the Supreme Court, not to determine what has already been done, apparently, but to “guide future discussions.”
And somewhere along the way, citizens and civil society who went to Parliament to observe in high hopes and expectations of a historic exercise are asked out of the Chamber.
Only in our constitutional reform story will you find such a perfect cocktail for a constitutional crisis.
