The smaller the State the more difficult it is to escape the domination of international capital and, therefore, the US. Ireland is independent in name but has little sovereignty left.

The British ruling class are, of course, abject loyalists to the US led capitalist order but this craven subservience is not a necessary feature of an independent Britain. Political figures as far apart as Harry Polit and Enoch Powell advocated for a sovereign Britain keeping its distance from the US, though at this point something close to a revolution would probably be needed.

Not really, Britain won an empire because it developed first a more productive economic system, capitalism. Much of the empire was destroyed indeed lucrative but lots of it was a drain. Britain’s problem was that its ruling class preferred deindustrialisation and immigration as a method to suppress the trend towards increasing the working class share of national wealth to such a degree that it hallowed the economy and the nation. Pretty much the standard playbook from an imperial elite.
