i didn’t realise how serious India’s comeback has been in Sri Lanka till I visited Colombo recently. i also didn’t realise the risks of JVP’s consolidation of power and inability to deliver on reforms.
here’s a piece for @CarnegieSAsia on what I learnt

New from @CarnegieSAsia : @PaliwalAvi reflects on Sri Lanka's careful economic and geopolitical balancing act. Economic recovery has brought Sri Lanka a modicum of stability, but domestic strains and great-power rivalry could test how long it lasts. https://t.co/9PLAm9fZfd

Just powered through the last 70 pgs to finish this bad boy. ( its great ! Avinash Paliwal gave me a real toe hold into a complicated situation) now I am rewarding myself with nachos while I watch Lanterns. Happy Sunday!
Avinash Paliwal's "India's Near East" is very good. It's a book on India's policy towards Myanmar and Bangladesh: past and present. Very helpful to understand India's approach towards these countries now, as Bangladesh underwent government change and Myanmar is torn by civil war.
“It is the trans-Atlantic order, with all its attendant values, that has collapsed rather than the 11 countries that met in New Delhi.” Prof @PaliwalAvi highlights sharply what the BRICS+ tells about the West and their collective insecurity than just the grouping itself. Read👇🏻

Is BRICS+ really in decline or is the West’s anxiety about it revealing something deeper?
Avinash Paliwal argues that the resilience of BRICS+ tells us more about the West’s own political and economic decline than about the grouping’s limitations.
China’s economic rise, expanding trade networks, alternative financial mechanisms and growing influence across the Global South are steadily challenging Western dominance. BRICS+ need not become an anti-Western bloc to matter.
For India, the challenge is to protect strategic autonomy while using BRICS+ as a platform for cooperation and balance.
A thought-provoking piece by @PaliwalAvi
