🚨 BREAKING:
The United Nations has officially declared Gaza a genocide zone, stating that Israel is deliberately targeting children and infants.
It took them three full years to reach this conclusion.
I am more than familiar with Palestine history during the British occupation -its crimes and legacy - and yet. Watching #Palestine36 was a gut-wrenching experience.
Gentle as it can be, Palestinian storytelling cannot hide the horror of the crimes Palestinians have endured.
UPDATE
The Israeli court approved the extension of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s detention, without charges.
The request for his immediate release was denied, despite the unlawful nature of his detention while carrying out his medical duties.
He is held in Negev Prison in harsh conditions, without access to medication or medical care, as his health continues to deteriorate.
We demand the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya along with 13 other detained doctors, as well as all medical personnel currently held in Israel. We call on the international community to intervene and put an end to this abuse.
"Veteran's Against Fascism," including disabled veterans, were arrested inside of the Capitol building today as they staged a protest against Trump's war in Iran.
This is Trump's America.
1/9 🧵Iran's military recently released a video threatening the "complete and utter annihilation" of the $30 billion OpenAI Stargate data center being built in Abu Dhabi. My @newyorker investigation with @andrewmarantz into Sam Altman and OpenAI helps explain how we got here—and the geopolitical entanglements at the heart of OpenAI's expansion into the Gulf.
Thread below, read in full here for much more: https://t.co/ZOusgFy2c9
2/9 During the Biden administration, Altman explored getting a security clearance to join classified AI policy discussions. A staffer at the RAND Corporation, which helped coordinate the process, wrote that Altman had been "actively raising 'hundreds of billions of dollars' from foreign governments," and that the UAE had gifted him a car—"I assume it was a very nice car." The staffer continued: "The only person I can think of who ever went through the process with this magnitude of foreign financial ties is Jared Kushner, and the adjudicators recommended that he not be granted a clearance." Altman withdrew.
3/9 Building advanced AI requires staggering capital. As one tech executive told us: "When you think about entities with a hundred billion dollars they can discretionarily spend per year… there's the US government, the Saudis, and the Emiratis—that's basically it." OpenAI's fundraising strategies reflected that reality.
4/9 According to internal documents, OpenAI's leadership once discussed starting a bidding war among world powers—including China, Russia, and the US—to compete for access to advanced AI. One junior researcher recalled thinking: "This is completely fucking insane." OpenAI says it was just one of many ideas "batted around at a high level." The plan was dropped after employees threatened to quit.
5/9 Altman developed a relationship with Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's crown prince. After bin Salman's alleged role in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi became clear, Altman stepped back from a formal advisory role connected to the Saudi government. But a policy consultant told us that behind the scenes, Altman's question was not whether taking Saudi money was wrong—but "can I get away with it?"
6/9 OpenAI also sought investment from the United Arab Emirates, where Altman built a relationship with Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan—the nation's spymaster—and separately pitched Emirati investors on a massive AI infrastructure buildout, some of it situated in the Middle East.
7/9 A senior Biden administration official told us Altman's relationships with the Emiratis "raised a lot of red flags for some of us" and that "a lot of people in the Administration did not trust him a hundred per cent." Officials were concerned the UAE—which has reportedly leaked American technology to China—could commandeer a US-owned data center to build disproportionately powerful AI.
8/9 Those same relationships became an asset under Trump. On his second day in office, Trump and Altman announced Stargate: a $500 billion joint venture to build a vast network of AI infrastructure across the US About a week later, Altman announced plans for Stargate to expand into the UAE, including a data center campus in Abu Dhabi seven times the size of Central Park.
9/9 A former OpenAI executive described what's being built: "We're building portals from which we're genuinely summoning aliens. The portals currently exist in the United States and China, and Sam has added one in the Middle East. It's just, like, wildly important to get how scary that should be." The full investigation is in @newyorker now. Link is also in bio.
We are through most of the really bad crisis astrology of Q1-2
The good news is that at least in My Astro TA system we are now generally leaning bullish for #Crypto and #Stocks all the way into early June's Benefic Venus Jupiter conjunction at 25 degrees Cancer
Doesn't mean there won't be pullbacks and set backs and bad weeks
But things are generally moving in the right direction now
Southern Lebanon is being hollowed out.
Over one million people displaced. Towns and villages flattened. Infrastructures destroyed. Innocent civilians killed - including many children. There is absolutely no justification for this. None whatsoever.
