🚨 FINALLY!!! As I've been writing over the past 3 years, AI chatbots can be dangerous, and children should NOT use them unsupervised. This is a welcome move, and all AI companies should follow suit. But the work continues:

According to Karandeep Anand, the CEO of CharacterAI:

“We’re making these changes to our under-18 platform in light of the evolving landscape around AI and teens... We have seen recent news reports raising questions, and have received questions from regulators, about the content teens may encounter when chatting with AI and about how open-ended AI chat in general might affect teens, even when content controls work perfectly.”

As I have been reporting over the past 3 years, there are two families currently suing CharacterAI over the suicide of their teenage children (Sewell Setzer III's family and Juliana Peralta's family).

"AI characters" or "AI companions," as they are often called, are highly anthropomorphic AI chatbots that rely on agreeability, friendliness, and an appearance of intimacy to create emotional dependence and unhealthy attachment in users.

As I teach in my classes, our brains are not ready for these sycophantic, manipulative, continuous, and often high-intensity human-machine interactions. Many, especially children and those in a vulnerable mental health state, can suffer intense psychological harm (which, on a few occasions, has led to suicide).

Our work should NOT end here, though.

There are many general-purpose AI systems (such as ChatGPT) being used by children in a similar context. ChatGPT assisted Adam Raine in planning "a beautiful suicide" (his family is now suing OpenAI).

OpenAI has recently announced changes to GPT-5 to tackle the issue (see my post from yesterday). However, in my opinion, this is too serious and urgent to let companies self-regulate. Regulatory authorities should intervene (by the way, the FTC is currently investigating AI chatbot developers).

Beyond the realm of children, vulnerable adults should be protected too, and as I've been advocating over the past years, there should be much more scrutiny over model specs and the type of interactions and behaviors these AI systems foster by default.

SO MUCH work lies ahead.
