If you want to talk about being “ethnically English”, then first define what that actually means. Ancient Britons? The Angles, Saxons and other Germanic peoples who started arriving around 1,600 years ago? The people they mixed with? The Vikings? Normans? Or the immense amount of mixing that has happened before and since? England has never been some genetically pure population. Even the people who ultimately created England were themselves migrants who mixed with people already here.

But that isn’t even the debate we’re having.

The debate is whether a black guy born in London, who grew up here, went to school here, works here, has English values and considers England his home, has the same right to call himself English as I do.

I’m a mixture of Irish, Polish and God knows what else. Yet despite that ancestry, my "Englishness" has never been questioned. Nobody asks me to produce my Anglo-Saxon family tree. Nobody demands to know whether my ancestors were here in the 5th century.

Why? Because I’m white.

Yet suddenly when the person calling himself English is black, we’re told “English” is an ethnicity and apparently need to start tracing bloodlines back 1,500 years.

That’s why I don’t buy the attempt to dress this argument up as some academic debate about ethnicity, because the distinction only ever seems to be made when the person in question isn't white.

This debate is about race, and the premise is racism. Nothing more, nothing less.

@legsidelizzy It’s horrendous. The feeling is impossible to understand unless you have it. Eating noises, snoring, the sound of sweet wrappers or crisp packets, tapping sounds - the list goes on. CBT helped me temper my reactions a bit so might be worth a try

D-Day service in 2005. My dad & his mate - both no longer with us. As young men they went into the unknown to save our futures. We are in danger of repeating the mistakes that led to WWII - I pray we wake up & avoid it #DDay82
