The resonant message of Mayor Johnson’s budget address is: If you live in Chicago, progressives are giving you more reasons to leave. If you don’t live in Chicago, don’t come here.

For businesses, Johnson’s message is even more menacing: We intend to tax you out of the city or out of existence.

In sum, the mayor is proposing to close a $1.16 billion budget deficit almost entirely by raising taxes and fees $586 million, and declaring dividing up nearly $1 billion in one-time TIF surplus, 0ver $500 million will be turned over to the schools.

When not using progressive vernacular to trumpet this disastrous budget as a victory for the working class, the mayor railed against corporations and the wealthy and employed timeworn soak-the-rich verbiage.

In other ill-advised proposals certain to fetter the city’s economy, Johnson revives the corporate “head tax,” and submitted tax increases on “cloud-based” services, social media and a crushing congestion tax.

A lazy budget, Johnson’s proposed “cuts” consist of $200 million in a budget that has grown 66% since 2019 and forces CPD to shear $98 million. So much for a “public safety” plan.

Johnson’s budget does nothing to address the city’s financial crisis. It just kicks the can down the road to what will likely be a comparable budget deficit next year.

President Trump sending 500 National Guards to Chicago is not bringing public safety to our streets. Neither is defunding the police. These are false choices. Both are wrong. Neither offers a comprehensive or sustained path to public safety.

Real safety is about putting more officers on the street, practicing community policing, keeping kids safe, taking guns and gangs off the street, and investing in long-term community partnerships.

It’s time to move past our broken politics. Americans deserve better.

In 2011 Rahm axed the corporate head tax to move money from the pockets of working people to the bank accounts of his rich buddies. Trump's billionaire tax breaks take that model to the extreme.

Chicago now has an opportunity to reverse that and make a real budget for the people
