Today, my book finally enters the big wide world! Exciting and also nerve-wracking! I'm really thrilled with this lovely review in The Spectator today, which describes it as "powerful and refreshing". If that sounds like YOUR cup of tea, please buy a copy!
The most knowledgable film historian I have ever known and also very generous with research and comments. Kevin’s books are essential reading; his films essential viewing. Thank you Kevin.
Saluting historian Kevin Brownlow, who turns 88 today! If you've never seen the 1980 series, Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film, written and directed by Brownlow and David Gill, you can pop over to YouTube and treat yourself! It's amazing.
Looking forward to this. It’s the kind of book we would have featured and discussed extensively in our Festival of Ideas. Perhaps there will be other opportunities to do this in Bristol.
I have a new trade book coming out with @politybooks in October! (Available to preorder now.) It considers the highly politicised conversations that are taking place around the arts today, and considers whether they are helping or hindering the arts at a time of crisis. /
In Bath recently a swan and a cygnet were killed by narrow boats in a lock where there are signs up not to let swans get in the lock. The holidaymakers didn’t seem to care. Boat owners nearby have had to open the locks specially to allow swans and cygnets stuck there.
This is what entitlement looks like! 🤬
There are nesting waterbirds on this pond on Hampstead Heath... there are also big 'No Swimming' signs, all being totally ignored! 🤬
Pure selfishness... 😒🤬🤬

At a WEIMAR talk in Germany, an elderly woman raised her hand for Q&A. She was the niece of Carl Weirich, whose story I tell in the book! She gave me a diary he'd dedicated to his life with his first wife Friedel, who died in 1920.

Good to see @danielmendelsohn is coming to Bristol 27 May for his new translation of The Odyssey (which is terrific). Book here: https://t.co/oE7C8Qyvs6
Are you tired of the utopian/dystopian AI predictions from CEOs? Do you want to hear what's ACTUALLY happening, from the people it's actually happening TO? If so, I have good news: I felt the same, so I have worn out my shoe-leather & written this book! https://t.co/qW76MRT12p...
Finished @hoyer_kat new book on Weimar this morning. It’s excellent. And the lessons for today are clear. A major contribution to our understanding of the period and the city. https://t.co/nXUhxYgYa3
I’ve always admired translators and Anthea Bell is one of the very best. She did events for me in the Glasgow Book Festival. One on translating books; the other on Asterix. And for Bristol she spoke about Stefan Zweig. All terrific. I miss events like these.
Today would have been the 90th birthday of my mother, Anthea Bell. She translated hundreds of great books. But the one at top left remains my favourite.
He wants his money and we want you read our review (by @pandaemoniumnow) about @Criterion’s latest release of John Boorman’s #NeoNoir masterpiece Point Blank (1967). Plus a chance to win a copy: https://t.co/v6fQivfQW7

Quick trip to the bookshop to get a copy of @hoyer_kat new book for weekend reading. Good to see it prominently placed at the front of the shop. My interview with Hoyer for Bristol Ideas about her previous book Beyond the Wall is still available: https://t.co/tiNRfu0C7y
