Dinner/Drinkware design has several features that go unnoticed, but are glaringly obvious when they are missing. 🧵(1/2)
Take for e.g. these modern dinnerware sets. They are everywhere. What's the problem with these?
1) Flat plates struggle to contain foods with gravy/sauce, causing messes with the slightest movement.
2) The absense of bottom rim means dirt from countertops can easily transfer to the flat bottom. A tiny drop of sauce smears across a large flat bottom. And you'll be stamping that dab of sauce everywhere with your plate. This escalates fast as other plates then pick up the sauce.
3) Lack of a thumb rest around the edge of the plate complicates handling. Handle it from the top rim and you've just created a fulcrum at the edge of the plate (Unstable). Your thumb will most likely land inside the serving area as you struggle, overrun by sauces sloshing around on a flat surface.
4) Handling is further undermined as you try to pick up the plates. There is no overhang for your fingers to slide under.
