James’s redemption arc works because he had to face his demons. Ruby didn’t forgive him out of sympathy for his pain. He was forced to confront his mistakes and try to fix them. He had to show her that he was truly willing to change.

What I love about James and Ruby’s relationship is that she doesn’t fix him. She calls him out on his behaviour, and he decides to change. He puts in the work, faces his mistakes, and gets better for himself and for her.
