Arab leaders wanted to honor the murderers of Hebron — while the Jewish community was still mourning its dead.

On this day in 1930, the Palestine Bulletin reported that Arab leaders planned public assemblies and discussed erecting a statue to honor three men executed by the British: Muhammad Jamjoum, Fuad Hijazi, and Ataa Al-Zir. These were three of the ringleaders convicted for particularly brutal murders during the 1929 Hebron massacre. The British banned the gatherings, but the sentiment was clear — and it continues today in some circles that still call them “heroes.”

Now go back to what they actually did.

The Hebron Massacre — August 23–25, 1929

For generations, the ancient Jewish community of Hebron lived in relative peace with their Arab neighbors. They spoke Arabic and shared cultural ties.

That peace shattered on August 23, 1929.

The Mufti of Jerusalem, Amin al-Husseini, invented the now oft-repeated false rumor that the Jews were plotting to destroy Al-Aqsa, and incited riots and mass murder.

Arab mobs, armed with clubs, knives, and axes, rampaged through the Jewish quarter. They broke into homes and the Slobodka Yeshiva, murdering men, women, and children in horrific fashion. Rabbi Ya’acov Slonim, who had opened his home as a shelter for terrified Jews, was killed after refusing to hand over yeshiva students.

By the end of the three-day massacre, 67 Jews lay dead — their homes and synagogues destroyed. The few hundred survivors were evacuated to Jerusalem. Hebron, a city holy to Judaism and with continuous Jewish presence for centuries, was suddenly ethnically cleansed of all of its Jews.

Yet even in the horror, humanity shone through. Nineteen Arab families risked their lives to hide and protect dozens (perhaps hundreds) of Jews. One rescuer, Abu Id Zaitoun, and his relatives shielded a Jewish family with swords and hid them until they could be escorted to safety.

The broader 1929 Arab riots across Mandatory Palestine killed 133 Jews. But Hebron remains one of the most infamous chapters — an eruption of medieval hatred and violence against an indigenous Jewish population.

The Jewish community never fully returned to their ancestral homes. When some tried after 1967, the path was long and difficult. Yet the memory endures: of lives cut short, of bravery amid evil, and of the hope that neighborly humanity can still prevail even when hatred takes over.

We remember the dead of Hebron.

We remember those who celebrated and wanted to commemorate the slaughter.

We also remember the righteous who stood against the mob.

The summit that exposed Arafat’s true intentions.

Camp David opened on this day. Ehud Barak — with Bill Clinton’s backing — offered Yasser Arafat a Palestinian state on 96% of the “West Bank”, 100% of Gaza, the dismantling of most “settlements,” and East Jerusalem as its capital.

Israel even agreed to Palestinian sovereignty over the Temple Mount — with only minor Israeli control over parts of the Western Wall. Plus 4% of Israel to make up for the 4% of the “West Bank."

Arafat said no.

He could not accept the one clause that mattered most: an end to the conflict and all future claims.

As Dennis Ross later explained, Arafat was unwilling to give up the dream of “the whole of Palestine” or the so-called “right of return” that would demographically destroy Israel.

The summit collapsed. Almost immediately thereafter, Arafat green-lit the Second Intifada — the wave of suicide bombings, shootings, and mass murder that killed more than 1,000 Israelis. That years-long slaughter of civilians is what necessitated the construction of the security fence and checkpoints — the only things that finally stopped the bloodshed.

Arafat never wanted a state next to Israel.

He wanted Israel gone.

Most people think the Jews vanished from the Land of Israel for nearly 2,000 years until Theodor Herzl suddenly invented Zionism in the late 19th century.

That’s a myth.

Jews never fully left the Land. Ancient Jewish communities continued in Jerusalem, Safed, Hebron, and Tiberias for centuries. And in every generation, exiled Jews returned in waves whenever conditions allowed.

Written calls for the restoration of the Jewish homeland go back hundreds of years before Herzl.

In 1621, Sir Henry Finch, a senior legal advisor to King James I of England, published one of the earliest English calls for the return of the Jews.

His book, The World’s Great Restoration or Calling of the Jews, argued for the restoration of Jewish national dominion in the Land of Israel.

The reaction was swift and brutal. King James saw the work as a threat to royal authority. Finch and his publisher were arrested, the book was suppressed, and Finch lost everything. He died in prison a few years later.

Finch was a Christian writing in a deeply Christian context, yet his call was rooted in the reality of Jewish suffering, dispersion, and the continuous Jewish presence in the Land.

Ideas like his helped shift attitudes in England (from the 1290 expulsion of Jews from the country to Cromwell’s invitation for their return in 1655) and laid groundwork for later Christian support for Jewish restoration.

Jewish longing for return had never disappeared. Zionism is baked into Judaism itself. Jews have prayed three times a day for centuries for the return to Jerusalem. And calls for reestablishing the Jewish homeland were being written about, even by non-Jews, hundreds of years before the popular narrative admits.

One day, more people from hostile countries will be able to enjoy Israel as I do. You will see how much you've missed all these years. Not just the food. The warmth. The welcome. Real friendship and genuine people.

It’s not your imagination. Hamas runs a sophisticated, and unfortunately highly-effective, propaganda machine designed to demonize & delegitimize Israel.

Back in 2014, Hamas’ Interior Ministry issued explicit guidelines to civilians & activists on how to lie to the media:

- Call every dead terrorist an “innocent civilian.”

- Always frame Hamas attacks as “responses to Israeli aggression.”

- Never show rockets being launched from civilian areas.

- When talking to Westerners, use calm, rational language. Avoid overt antisemitism. Equate Israel with Nazis instead.

- Hide military activity among civilians.

These techniques have only gotten more sophisticated since October 7. Captured documents show the strategy has been refined and scaled up with multi-year plans, budgets, and tailored messaging (religious incitement internally, humanitarian language for the West).

Hamas embeds fighters and weapons in civilian areas, tells people not to evacuate when Israel warns them, and then counts every death as an “innocent civilian casualty” to feed international outrage.

The Arab Revolt against the Jews was in its third brutal month, and much of the world barely noticed.

Between June 16-July 17, 1936, Arab terrorists murdered nine Jewish civilians, most in cold-blooded ambushes on city buses. They also deliberately destroyed 75,000 trees planted by Jewish pioneers in an attempt to erase the results of Jewish labor.

The Arab Revolt was a coordinated campaign of murder, intimidation, and sabotage designed to stop Jewish immigration and development in their ancestral homeland. Arab gangs attacked Jewish villages, sniped at civilians on the roads, and burned fields and orchards.

The British government’s own 1937 report to the League of Nations described the reality plainly:

“The terrorist campaign took the form of isolated murder and attempted murder; of sporadic cases of armed attacks on military, police and civilian road transport; on Jewish settlements and on both Arab and Jewish private property.”

The violence would continue through 1939, with thousands of attacks. Jews were targeted simply for existing and trying to rebuild their homeland.

The revolt was heavily organized and incited by Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Yes, the same man who would later become a close Nazi collaborator, meet with Hitler, and actively work to prevent Jews from escaping to British Mandate Palestine during the Holocaust. He didn’t just target Jews: he also murdered fellow Arabs and opposed the British when they were seen as too soft on Jewish immigration.

This 1936–1939 Arab Revolt was the first major modern attempt to prevent a Jewish state through violence. It failed militarily, but it succeeded in pressuring Britain into appeasement with the catastrophic 1939 White Paper, which drastically restricted Jewish immigration to the Land of Israel at the exact moment millions were desperate to escape Nazi Europe.

The result? Countless Jews who might have been saved were trapped and murdered in the Holocaust.

The war to prevent Jewish life in the Land of Israel began long before 1948.

Last October I stood on the Temple Mount and prayed with a group of Jews. At the entrance, Israeli police asked me to leave my Siddur in a locker. No provocation allowed. A rabbi from New York protested. I suggested we use our phones instead.

I did not feel like I was breaking some natural law. I felt like I was witnessing an absurdity that has been normalized for decades.

Sharon’s visit to the Temple Mount in 2000 was followed by the Second Intifada. I grew up in the Arab world, where the reports said the Jews desecrated the site. I don’t think the visit caused the uprising. I think it was the pretext. But what mobilized the masses was the accusation itself: that Jews had “desecrated” Al-Aqsa.

Sit with that. The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism. Jews are accused of desecrating it by simply being present on it.

Now imagine the reverse. Imagine Jews or Christians had conquered Mecca centuries ago, and today Muslims were accused of desecrating the Kaaba by praying near it. The world would not stay silent. It would erupt.

The current arrangement dates back to Ottoman-era custom, formalized after 1967 and again under the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace treaty (article 9). It grants Jordan and the Islamic Waqf custodianship of the site, while non-Muslims may visit at fixed hours but not pray visibly. This is not a minor technicality. It is a rule written specifically to suppress any sign of a Jewish claim to Judaism's holiest place.

And the "desecration" narrative it was designed to avoid has been weaponized again and again regardless: in 1929, when riots over rumors of a Jewish takeover of the site killed over 130 Jews and 100 Arabs; in 1990, when Israeli forces killed 17 Palestinians after a Jewish group's plan to lay a cornerstone for the Temple sparked riots; in 2017, when a shooting attack led to new security measures that triggered eleven days of unrest and eleven deaths; in 2021, when settlers breaking the prayer ban set off fresh clashes. Each time, rumors or symbolic acts — not any actual change to Muslim control of the site — were enough to ignite mass violence. The lesson drawn by the arrangement's defenders is that restraint prevents catastrophe. The lesson I draw is different. Appeasement has not bought peace. It has bought over seventy years of permission for the lie to keep working.

Jews were persecuted for millennia. In their own Jerusalem, they were tolerated for centuries as inferior subjects under Muslim rule. That ended in 1967. And still, the status quo at the Temple Mount treats Jewish prayer as a provocation to be managed, hidden, conducted secretly.

I understand why the arrangement exists. It was built to prevent exactly the kind of mass mobilization that followed Sharon’s visit. The fear is that any change will be read as a claim to sovereignty, and that the symbolic cost will outweigh the practical gain of quiet prayer. Israeli society itself is divided on this and many share that caution.

I don’t.

A rule that asks probably the most persecuted people in history to hide their prayer books at their own holiest site is meant to appease their bullies.

That status quo should be abolished.
