Every fan has that one moment they’ll never forget. This is mine.
January 27, 2006. The Florida Panthers were taking on Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils. The Cats won 4–0, and Roberto Luongo recorded his 100th career victory with a shutout.
My dad has been a Panthers season ticket holder since the inaugural season, and growing up we almost never stayed for the Three Stars of the Game. But for whatever reason, that night I asked if we could stay.
I was the only kid standing at the glass.
The arena announcer called, “The first star of the game, with a shutout and his 100th career win… Roberto Luongo!”
Luongo came out of the tunnel, looked directly at me, pointed… and tossed me his game-used, signed stick from his 100th career win.
I just stood there in complete shock. Then I turned around, looked at my dad, threw my hands in the air holding the stick, and the crowd erupted. It’s one of those memories that’s burned into my mind forever—and I know it’s one my dad and I will cherish for the rest of our lives.
I’ve been lucky enough to witness incredible moments as a Panthers fan over the years, including watching this franchise become Stanley Cup champions. But somehow, that night in 2006 still feels just as special.
Thank you, @FlaPanthers, for creating memories that last a lifetime. I’d love to hear if anyone else has a Panthers memory they’ll never forget.
there is no fucking way the panthers have to start in carolina and then go all the way to california AND ALSO BE THE HOME OPENER FOR EVERY SINGLE CALIFORNIA TEAM. WHAT THE HELL
Florida Panthers will open on the road at Carolina Hurricanes banner raising on Sept. 29.
Then head west with games in San Jose, Los Angeles and Anaheim. Home opener on Oct. 10 v #Wild.
Leo Luongo has officially been named Head of Goaltending for the New Jersey Devils. He becomes the first member of the Panthers Goaltending Excellence Department to be plucked away by another team. Congrats to Leo for the well-deserved new position, he should thrive in Jersey.
