Observer writer @carolecadwalla has been warned by management to "desist" after recent making statements about the proposed sale of the title to Tortoise. She has just denounced the deal at an international conference on press freedom https://t.co/80pKtf5hPa
We, the journalists united against this deal, have been unable to express how profoundly we believe this deal will lead to the beginning of the end of the Observer’s & a degradation of everything we thought the Guardian held dear.

There is no route for Guardian & Observer journalists to speak out about the threat to press freedom their own management poses. Thank you to @OSCE for asking me to give keynote at their summit on press freedom today where I was able to raise the issue with international orgs.
Got my Observer newspaper today. The very best of the Sunday titles. It’s vital that we support the journalists at the Observer and Guardian who are opposed to the Tortoise Media deal - @sarah_donaldson@soniasodha
‘My colleagues at The Observer and I believed we were saving it from extinction. It turns out we were setting it up to be betrayed three decades later’

The @Guardian is keen to thank people like me for supporting it via a subscription. But it doesn't ask people like me what we think of the proposal to lop off a key part of my subscription package. Its appeal will quickly diminish if the Observer goes.
@paulfwebster Thank you to everyone who’s written. If you have views on the sale you can write to [email protected]. And/or or copy me in: [email protected]. I think what makes us feel so sad & naive is that we had this ‘implicit trust’ too.
The Guardian & Observer NUJ union chapels now have their own Twitter account ahead of our strike next week - @GdnObsNUJ. If you care about independent journalism, press freedom & collective action please follow for updates. 🙏
The owner of the Guardian has been urged to pause the sale of The Observer to Tortoise Media by five former editors and one ex-editor in chief of the title.

A compelling interview with @paulfwebster, the man who until 2 weeks ago edited the Observer, on his bafflement over Guardian’s decision to sell

And here's one from God's own poet Lemn Sissay: "Absolute bag of shite [the sale, not the NUJ). You are the guardians doing what a Guardian should. Guarding!!!" Lemn is one of a number of poets, singers & royals hoping to join us on Wednesday (OK we made up the bit about royals)
One of the most powerful feelings to emerge from yesterday's NUJ meeting was shame at how our management is acting in trying to give away Britain's oldest Sunday newspaper to a broke startup and pride at our unity in standing up for true Guardian values
✊🏽✊✊🏿
So we had an incredibly empowering NUJ meeting yesterday. Almost 500 people (a record) attended in person and online, and there was unanimity about the need to strike to save the Obs. ✊🏽✊✊🏿
