A woman called me at 11:47 p.m. and immediately said, please don't hang up

I almost did. She had dialed the wrong number

I told her so

There was silence, then she said, I know, I'm sorry

I was about to end the call when she started crying

She explained that she had just left the hospital after sitting beside her father for hours

He was asleep, but she was scared

She had meant to call her sister but accidentally called me instead

I didn't know this woman and she didn't know me. But somehow, neither of us hung up

For almost twenty minutes, I listened while she talked about her father

How he used to walk her to school

How he still called her little girl even though she was in her forties

How she wasn't ready to lose him

I didn't offer advice, there wasn't any useful advice to give

When she finally calmed down, she said, “I'm sorry you had to hear all that”

I told her maybe you needed someone to hear it

She laughed quietly, “Maybe I did”

Before hanging up, she said, “Thank you, wrong number”

I smiled after the call ended
