In a groundbreaking experiment, researchers have directly observed optical vortices — tiny dark “holes” where light waves cancel each other out — accelerating to speeds exceeding that of light.

These vortices are not particles or signals carrying information. They are phase singularities: swirling points of zero light intensity embedded within the wave itself, much like whirlpools in an ocean of light.

The team studied these vortices inside a special two-dimensional material (hexagonal boron nitride), where light slows dramatically and forms intricate polariton patterns. As two oppositely charged vortices approached each other, they rapidly accelerated, briefly surpassing the speed of light just before annihilating.

This does not violate relativity. No mass or usable information travels faster than light; the apparent superluminal motion arises purely from the changing shape and interference of the wave, similar to how a shadow or a wave crest can sweep across a surface faster than any physical object.

To capture this fleeting phenomenon, the scientists used an advanced ultrafast electron microscope capable of resolving events on the scale of 3 quadrillionths of a second (3 × 10⁻¹⁵ s). By stitching together hundreds of repeated measurements, they created the first real-time timelapse of the vortices’ dramatic dance and annihilation.

The study marks the first experimental confirmation of a theoretical prediction dating back to the 1970s and reveals universal dynamics shared by many types of waves.
