Hydrogen contains approximately 142 megajoules of energy per kilogram, nearly three times more than gasoline by mass, making it the highest specific-energy fuel known.

But hydrogen is also the lightest element: even as a liquid at -253 degrees C, it is ten times less dense than water, meaning a hydrogen tank holds far less energy per litre than a petrol tank the same size.

This is why hydrogen vehicles need either very large tanks or very high pressure, the physics of the lightest element creates the engineering problem.
