June 14 is the anniversary of the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt. But how many California students could explain the Bear Flag Republic or how California became a state? We have no idea because California eliminated statewide testing in history and social studies. https://t.co/UuhQI2C7uJ
ICYMI: Defending Ed recently reported on a "Direct Action Training: School Walkouts" toolkit put together by the Alliance for Education Justice. The 36-page toolkit promotes direct action, even detailing how to turn "absence into power" by "disrupting normal school routines."
My colleague, @AndrewDav18, recently put together a banger report on the history & importance of charter schools in California & teachers unions' opposition to these kinds of options for parents.
It's worth considering.
Link to the report in the description.
NEW: We've sent a letter putting California @AGRobBonta on notice. 600 CA school districts are actively violating federal law and the U.S. Constitution by using AB 1955 to justify policies that conceal students’ gender transitions from their parents. https://t.co/9GCOssqYUW
Chino Valley Unified has filed a motion to dissolve the injunction blocking its original parental notification policy following the SCOTUS ruling in Mirabelli v. Bonta.
“The precedent is now set, the fight is over, and it’s time to lift that injunction once and for all.” — @realSonjaShaw

Early literacy laws requiring phonics, tightening retention & promotion policies, universal literacy screeners in early grades, rigorous curricula, & strict disciplinary policies.
Southern schools are winning the education race, and here's why:
It is indefensible that organizations claiming to care about students have reportedly directed over $1 billion to liberal pet projects while student outcomes continue to lag.
Yet another case study in why education should answer to students and families in the states.
I joined my friend & @CalPolicyCenter colleague, @WillSwaim on @TheRadioFreeCA to discuss the costs of the recent LAUSD union extortion effort to pull dollars out of a dead district.
@EmilyRaeCJC joins after to talk about the brave @RocklinUnified school board appealing their case of parental rights to the US Supreme Court.
Enjoy!

A big, beautiful tax credit is coming your way next year!
Contribute to a Scholarship Granting Organization to support school choice, and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700.
This case is about more than one school district.
It is about ensuring that constitutional rights cannot be decided behind closed doors in administrative proceedings.
LJC continues to stand with CA families in the fight against school secrecy policies.

📢CONFLICT OF INTEREST ALERT… LAUSD Acting Superintendent Andres Chait, who’s currently leading the district’s negotiations with the unions and trying to avert a strike, is the brother-in-law of *TWO* UTLA leaders (Secondary VP Alex Orozco and Director Victoria Casas) and married to a teacher who’s a UTLA member?
That’s right. Chait’s wife, Laura Chait Orozco, is Alex Orozco’s sister, according to multiple LAUSD sources, who say that the relationship is well-known among employees though not openly discussed. Laura, a 4th grade teacher at Topeka Street Charter in Northridge, is also a UTLA member.
Alex is married to UTLA Director and LAUSD teacher Victoria Casas. https://t.co/z8hb8ks2Iv
Orozco is UTLA’s healthcare bargaining lead and one of its top organizers, so Chait is essentially negotiating with his brother-in-law on a contract that he and his in-laws will directly and indirectly benefit from - and could "allow" a strike that could serve to build his in-laws’ political careers.
Thanks for the attention, Mike. But you're mischaracterizing our position.
No one wants to “kill neighborhood schools.” We all shop at the neighborhood grocery store. We send our kids to the childcare center down the street. We utilize the local post office.
We do all of the above without empowering the government to draw maps that keep our neighbors out.
Our suggested reforms are explicitly designed to protect the neighborhood character of the public schools.
