What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.
Over the last few weeks, I'd been mulling over writing a commentary post about heroism on 9/11. More recently, I was going to reference the deeply troubling dark and lonely final minutes of Iryna Zarutska with nobody rushing to her aid.
Sketched out in my mind, I planned to couch it in the recent pop culture debate over the more recent Superman entertainment projects by posing the question, Have we lost The American Way? The mild mannered ordinary American whether wearing a uniform or not, rushed towards danger and offered assistance on 9/11. In Charlotte, there was nobody to be found, not even a Lois or Clark pushing out her story. It feels so dark and spiritually dead, that I felt that our civic spirit aka The American Way really had departed us.
Then Charlie Kirk was assassinated while engaging in civil discourse at a university. I realized that my thoughts, no matter how well expressed in words are but vanity if nobody is truly listening. Charlie understood that problem and had pioneered an traveling institution of meaningful dialogue for young Americans. He was a courageous hero who embodied The American Way, which was not lost after all.
Instead, it was hated, targeted, and shot. Our cultural crisis will not be solved by elections, court decisions, or government policy. Rather, the crisis disrupts and corrupts those institutions. Our society needs healing. That healing will only come from that form of communication which relies on faith that somebody is listening. We call that prayer. Prayer without openness to the gift of faith devolves into screaming into the void, just as our politics without faith descends into violence.
I pray for the repose of the souls of the departed, the comfort of the families and friends who survive them, and the spiritual healing of so many feeling shock, grief, and despair from evils revealed 24 years ago on 9/11 and this year, in Minnesota, Charlotte, Utah, and elsewhere.
I pray that the Holy Spirit bestow greater faith in us for the return of our American spirit. The Liberty Bell may be badly cracked, but liberty must be proclaimed throughout the land once again. It starts with listening.
Charlie Kirk understood.
