On a day meant to celebrate love, visibility and freedom, Berlin Pride was shattered by violence.

A vehicle was driven into the crowd during Christopher Street Day celebrations in Berlin, killing one person and injuring many others. Families are grieving. Survivors are carrying unimaginable trauma. An entire community is mourning.

For everyone who still asks why Pride matters, this is why.

Pride has never been just a celebration. It has always been an act of visibility, resilience and defiance in the face of hatred. It exists because LGBTQ+ people still deserve to live openly, safely and without fear. Yesterday was a heartbreaking reminder that the fight is not over.

Today, we remember the life that was stolen. We stand with those who were injured. We stand with the people of Berlin. We stand with the LGBTQ+ community around the world.

Love will not be silenced. Pride will endure. Hate will never have the final word.

Spanish pro footballer Borja Iglesias delivered a powerful message about homophobia in football, saying the real issue isn't being targeted with anti-gay slurs; it's that LGBTQ+ players still don't feel safe enough to be themselves.

Reflecting on the abuse he's received after painting his nails in support of LGBTQ+ inclusion during a 10 March interview with AS, Iglesias said the insults no longer carry the weight they once did.

"The first few times it affected me; I took it personally," Iglesias said. "After reflecting on it, I see things differently. Calling me a f*ggot, I don't consider that an insult. When a guy says that, I think I'd be happier being gay than being like him, with nothing better to do than insult people at the end of a match."

He added that what truly concerns him is the impact this hostility has on others: "What bothers me is that a gay person is afraid to come out because of these kinds of reactions. Not being able to be yourself and love who you want is unacceptable, which is why the fight against homophobia is essential and why I'm involved in it."

The Spanish international, who is part of Spain's 2026 World Cup squad, also reflected on football's deeply ingrained macho culture, saying it remains "sad" that openly gay male footballers are still virtually nonexistent at the highest level of the men's game.

It also predicted that the people likely to be upset about prospect were "radical gay… groups".
In 2020 the Mail was the most popular newspaper in the UK. It previously supported fascist politicians like Adolf Hitler in Germany, Benito Mussolini in Italy and Oswald Mosley in Britain.
Today it continues to direct hate against groups like transgender people, Muslims, disabled people and others, and articles by its columnists like Melanie Phillips have been cited in manifestoes produced by neo-Nazi terrorists like Anders Breivik.
