This was during the M7.8 earthquake in the Philippines last week.

The ground is basically losing strength beneath the surface, usually in water-saturated soil, so it can start behaving less like solid ground and more like a thick, shifting slurry.

Roads and pavements can crack, sink or tilt as if they’re floating on something unstable, and you sometimes get water and sand pushing up through the surface.

It can look like the ground is moving in waves or “sailing”, but what’s actually happening is the soil structure collapsing temporarily under the shaking.

WATCH: New video of a US Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet crashing into a hillside near Rimrock Lake, Washington on Saturday.

The pilot safely ejected from the aircraft before the crash and was transported to a hospital, according to Naches Fire.

In a statement, the Marine Corps said, "The cause of the mishap is currently under investigation. To preserve the integrity of the investigation, no additional details are available at this time. Mishap investigations can take several months to complete, depending on various factors."
