We must admit honestly and humbly that many of us still feel lost for words and helpless when someone we care about quietly battles depression or grapples with suicidal thoughts. In those moments, we often freeze not out of a lack of care but fear of saying the wrong thing or making things worse.
However, silence and uncertainty don’t protect anyone. Untreated mental illness doesn’t only steal lives through suicide; it often fuels pain that ripples outward, harming others within families, communities and society.
Mental health is never a private struggle; it’s a shared human responsibility and a matter of public safety. Every person suffering in isolation is one we’ve collectively failed to reach.
That’s why we need to change. We must normalise reaching out for help long before despair spirals into crisis – without shame, judgement or waiting for rock bottom. Let’s create a world where saying “I’m not okay” is met with open arms rather than awkward silence. Support should be seen as strength, not weakness.
Because behind every statistic is a person who once hoped someone would notice. And behind every preventable tragedy lies a simple truth: none of us have to carry this alone.
You can’t just ‘snap out of it’ when you have depression and hearing you say that is harmful. It shows you have no understanding and don’t care enough to understand. No matter how hard you try to fight the thoughts, the darkness completely consumes you, feels like no way out.
