the problem is that we don't "randomly cut everything by 10-35%." when it comes to austerity, the first things on the chopping block are always education, healthcare, and aid to the poor. why don't we first try "randomly" chopping corporate welfare and "see what happens?"

@sjs856 IE a chemist and a historian both do research, but for the chemist it's going to consist of observing reactions to understand them on a mathematical and physical level, while a historian cross-references several documents to verify a piece of info. different and non-transferrable

@sjs856 I think the problem is people make up their own definition of research based on "well that sounds right I guess" without any training on how to set and define methodologies, control for variables, and understand that what holds weight as "research" is often specific to each field

@sjs856 then as people run along with their own poorly-realised version of research, things like confirmation bias (and simply not knowing what you're doing) lead people to conclusions they hold very strongly to, even if said conclusions hold zero weight under scrutiny.
