Police arrest 15 after mob kills motorcyclist over fake bandit invasion claim in Lagos
The Lagos police command says a commercial motorcyclist was killed by a mob after residents, acting on false reports of a bandit invasion, allegedly mistook him for a criminal amid growing fears over insecurity.
In a statement on Monday, Abimbola Adebisi, spokesperson of the command, dismissed viral social media posts claiming that armed bandits had invaded Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, Oke-Afo and other parts of Lagos state and were targeting schools and children.

SIMON KOLAWOLE: "The fourth group consists of the “primordial patrons”. This is one of the biggest voting clusters. Voters are mobilised, or mobilisable, around ethnic, regional or religious emotions. They are naturally programmed to choose people who speak their language, or who come from their own part of the country, or who share their religious beliefs. Primordial voting is very evident in every election cycle in Nigeria, although we like to deceive ourselves that we are choosing based on “merit”. In the 2023 presidential election, there were those who voted for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu because of the Muslim/Muslim ticket or because he was Yoruba. Mr Peter Obi received massive votes based on religion as well: he was the only Christian in the race with a realistic chance. Also, he had a great deal of support among his Igbo kindred. There were northerners who supported Alhaji Atiku Abubakar solely because he was a northerner — and a northern Muslim at that. All these are natural motivations that many pretend otherwise all the time."

EXCLUSIVE: In tell-all memoir, Gowon says the north believed Ojukwu knew about 1966 coup
Northern military officers believed Chukwuemeka Ojukwu was complicit in the January 1966 coup d’etat and wanted to move against him, Yakubu Gowon, former military head of state, has revealed in his memoir.
Gowon, who ruled Nigeria from July 1966 to July 1975, will present his memoir, ‘My Life of Duty and Allegiance’, in Abuja today.
TheCable saw an advance copy of the book, published by the Havilah Group, Lagos.
In the January 1966 coup executed by officers mostly of Igbo origin, key northern leaders and military officers were killed.
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the prime minister; Ahmadu Bello, premier of the Northern region; Ladoke Akintola, premier of the Western region who was their political ally; and Festus Okotie-Eboh, minister of finance, were all killed.
Zakariya Maimalari, a brigadier and the most senior military officer from the north, was also killed alongside many other northerners in the military.
The coup failed and Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, a major general and the army chief, became the head of state.

INTERVIEW: I used AI to summarise notes, joined WhatsApp groups to study, says UTME top scorer
On Monday, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) declared @OwoeyeDaniella the highest scorer in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The teenager topped the chart of the ten highest scorers with 372 marks. But from the depth of her preparation, the achievement is undoubtedly well deserved.
In this interview with TheCable’s IMOLEAYO OYEDEYI, the teenager takes a deep dive into the rigorous preparation and demanding journey that led to her UTME success. She says the biggest factor for her was not just parental support, but a mindset shift, because “big schools don’t define success”.
On this episode of #Politeracy101 with @electoralcollng, @umaryakubu will join us to unpack the critical link between governance and corruption in Nigeria, and ways corruption manifests beyond monetary terms.

Have you ever heard of Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act?⚖️
It was passed in 2015 to tackle online crimes like fraud, hacking, identity theft, and cyberstalking.
However the vague language of the law made it open to misinterpretation.
Here’s what you need to know📽️

On Thursday, a group of “youths”, calling itself the Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan, marched to the Abuja residence of the former president singing and dancing, and asking him to run for president. He told them he was going to consult. He said something about computer science that I didn’t quite get. In other words, he doesn’t have any plans to run. The youths are the ones begging him to come and “rescue Nigeria” — the favourite phrase of opposition parties since 2007. Because he “never” wanted to run, he has to consult to make up his mind. Haven’t we seen this before? Who remembers Youths Earnestly Ask for Abacha (YEAA)? Now, Youths Earnestly Ask for Jonathan (YEAJ). Hahahaha…
MENINGITIS MENACE
Some things happen so often in Nigeria that they no longer grab national headlines. Even if they do, who cares anyway? As many as 34 people have died in a meningitis outbreak across nine LGAs of Sokoto state. Yes, 34 human lives. Those who escape the barbarism of the bandits and terrorists are not guaranteed to see the next day. Diseases await. Dr Faruk Abubakar-Wurno, the commissioner for health, says most of the deaths occur at home before government intervention because victims always attribute what is clearly a medical problem to spiritual forces. There is definitely a correlation between poverty and communicable diseases, but — pray — where do we go from here? Distressing.
