In 1952, something remarkable happened for Indian cinema.

The chief of the Film Division, who had attended international film discussions in Europe, returned to India with the idea of organising a film festival. He met PM Jawaharlal Nehru, and with Nehru’s active patronage and encouragement, the Films Division of India organised the first International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

It was the first festival of its kind in Asia, and interestingly, it wasn't confined to Bombay alone. The festival travelled from Bombay to Madras, then to Delhi and Calcutta, bringing world cinema to Indian audiences.

For many Indian viewers, it was a major introduction to Italian Neorealism,films like Vittorio De Sica’s "Bicycle Thieves", Roberto Rossellini’s "Rome, Open City", and many others. The festival would go on to leave a lasting impact on Indian filmmakers and, in many ways, paved the way for the New Wave and Parallel Cinema movements that emerged in the years that followed.

Satyajit Ray, who was yet to step into the world of filmmaking at the time, later recalled,
"If the quality of films were the sole criterion, surely one of the best film festivals ever held anywhere was the first International Film Festival of India in 1952."

And Ray was certainly not alone. Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Guru Dutt and many others would be deeply influenced by the new cinematic language they encountered. That exposure would help transform the cinematic culture of the country in the decades to come.

Why did the Sikhs not join the Revolt of 1857?

To understand 1857, you have to understand what happened in Punjab only eight years earlier.

The Sikh Empire had fought two Anglo-Sikh Wars (1845–46 and 1848–49) before Punjab was finally annexed by the East India Company in March 1849. The Khalsa had fought some of the hardest battles the British encountered in India.

And here is a fact often forgotten:

The Sikh was not the traditional soldier of the British Indian Army before the annexation of Punjab.

The Bengal Army - the largest of the Company's armies - was overwhelmingly recruited from the high-caste Hindu population of the Gangetic plains, particularly Bengal, Bihar and Oudh. These Purbiya sepoys formed the backbone of the force that later mutinied in 1857.

After 1849, the British began recruiting Sikhs, including veterans of the defeated Khalsa, and rapidly built Punjab regiments from them.

So when 1857 erupted, many Sikhs did not see it as a straightforward war of Indian independence.

The rebels in Delhi proclaimed Bahadur Shah Zafar, the Mughal emperor, as their symbolic sovereign.

For a people whose collective memory carried the martyrdoms of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and the Sahibzade, and centuries of conflict with Mughal authority, the prospect of restoring Mughal power was hardly an inspiring cause.

And there was another memory: the Purbiya armies had fought against the Khalsa in the Anglo-Sikh Wars.

Sikhs therefore made a political and strategic choice - not necessarily out of affection for British rule, but because a Mughal restoration was not their vision of freedom.

History should not be reduced to “Sikhs supported the British.”

The reality is more powerful:

The Sikhs had just lost their own sovereign state. They had no reason to fight to restore the empire of those who had once persecuted them.

Tout ce que nous savons de Keanu Reeves, ce n’est pas lui qui nous l’a dit, mais les personnes qui ont bénéficié de son aide et de sa générosité. Il n’a jamais cherché à en parler.

Malgré toutes les épreuves qu’il a traversées, il aurait pu adopter une vision sombre et désespérée de la vie. Mais non : il a choisi de rester un homme bon, dans un monde qui ne l’est pas toujours. »
