The CEC is caught in a trap of his own making. Having misled the Hon’ble Supreme Court about the SIR process, he is now scrambling to defend the indefensible and make changes to the very process he had insisted was perfectly sound.

If all decisions on the SIR were unanimous, why is the ECI now undoing changes that, according to *The Indian Express* expose, fellow Election Commissioners had objected to as “illegal”?

If nothing is broken, what is the ECI trying to fix? And if the process needed fixing, why CEC lie to the Supreme Court earlier?

More importantly, what happens to the crores of voters disenfranchised by these "illegal and unconstitutional changes" to Form 6 which are being undone now?

Who will compensate the people of Bihar, West Bengal and Assam who lost their opportunity to vote because of a faulty SIR?

Will the Assemblies be dissolved? Can an election conducted after disenfranchising millions be treated as legitimate?

The Hon’ble Supreme Court must take cognisance of this grave injustice.

When 10,470 voters' details are altered in a constituency where the BJP won by just 7,000 votes, can the Election Commission expect citizens not to ask questions?

WHAT THE INVESTIGATION REVEALS

Neha Bora cites an Indian Express report based on an inquiry submitted by Pilibhit's District Election Officer.

According to the report, applications to modify the details of 10,470 voters through Form 8 were filed at midnight, on Sundays and public holidays, when government offices were closed.

The political significance is impossible to ignore: in the 2022 Assembly election, the BJP candidate won the constituency by approximately 7,000 votes.

The number of voter records reportedly subjected to alteration exceeds that victory margin.

THE OFFICIAL INQUIRY CONFIRMS IRREGULARITIES

This is no longer merely an Opposition allegation. The UP Chief Electoral Officer confirmed that:

* 13,779 Form 8 applications were entered.

* 10,470 were approved and found irregular.

* No physical applications or supporting documents were available in the office.

The Election Commission subsequently ordered the suspension of both Electoral Registration Officers, FIR proceedings and wider scrutiny of electoral rolls across Uttar Pradesh. India News - The Indian Express +1

THE QUESTION OF DEMOCRATIC ACCOUNTABILITY

An electoral roll is the foundation of representative democracy. Altering a voter's identity or details can potentially deprive an eligible citizen of the right to vote.

Who authorised these changes? Who failed to supervise the process? Could similar irregularities exist elsewhere?

The Election Commission must ensure that every affected voter's identity and voting rights are restored, and that responsibility is fixed transparently.

An election is not free and fair merely because people are allowed to stand in a queue and press a button. Their names, identities and voting rights must be protected.

Peace cannot mean silence in the face of electoral irregularities. Citizens have every right to question the institutions entrusted with protecting their democracy.
