Remembering Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on his death anniversary.
Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy was not merely a Congress leader; he was a true mass leader who built his political journey from the grassroots and remained deeply connected with the people.
His historic padyatra in 2003 was a turning point. Walking thousands of kilometres across Andhra Pradesh, he listened directly to farmers, workers, students, women and the poor. He understood their struggles not from reports, but by being among them.
When he became Chief Minister in 2004, he translated that understanding into governance.
Free power for farmers, irrigation initiatives, Aarogyasri, support for students, housing for the poor and numerous welfare measures made his government synonymous with people-centred development and social justice.
His belief was simple but profound:
Development has meaning only when it reaches the last person in the queue.
His tragic and untimely passing in 2009 came when he had much more to contribute. His vision for irrigation, agriculture, healthcare, education and inclusive development had many unfinished chapters.
Those unfinished dreams are perhaps the most enduring part of his legacy.
Today, when people’s leader @RahulGandhi speaks about social justice, equal opportunity, the rights of the marginalised and ensuring that every community gets its rightful share in power and resources, it reminds us of the same fundamental Congress principle that YSR embodied:
Politics is not about power for a few. Politics is about empowering the many.
YSR walked with the people to understand their pain and aspirations. His legacy reminds us that leadership begins by listening to the people and ends by transforming their lives.
On his death anniversary, I pay my heartfelt tribute to Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
The man may have left us, but his dream of a more just, inclusive and compassionate society lives on.
