Columbia professor Matthew Connelly criticizes AI companies for making unsubstantiated claims about how their products support student learning.

@mattspast: Would we tolerate for one second a pharmaceutical company who put out a product claiming that all your kid needs to do is take this pill once a day, and it's going to turn them into a varsity athlete without actually having done any safety testing or knowing what kind of long term consequences that might be from that product. We wouldn't put up with that for a moment.

@LauraTrevelyan: Are you saying that's what's happening with AI?

@mattspast: Absolutely. Because these companies, all of them, are making all kinds of unsubstantiated claims about how AI is going to support learning. Show me the evidence.

@LauraTrevelyan: Do you see any prospect at all of Congress taking action to introduce standards to protect students?

@mattspast: Well, it's hard to be optimistic about what Congress might do, but I can tell you there is a groundswell like we're seeing it among our students, among their parents. We're seeing a communities all across the country. I think we all of us now understand that an earlier kind of AI, machine learning algorithms already has done tremendous damage to young people.

So now we still have time, I think, to regulate this new form of AI so it doesn't damage this generation. Everyone to come.
