@EBL2017 I think we may see a tweak Sunday. I can see a moment of 442 basically VG and KH as a 2 and Eze left in the inside pocket. OOP Havertz disrupts Rodri and BS (good luck). City are weakest down their right. I would play martinelli RM to combat the running ability of Nico and Doku.
LW needs a look, LT19 and GM11 are decent on their day, both with big flaws which I believe Arteta will address. We lack a leader, I think VG14 can become one, he's been in his own head but looking confident now. MO8 may be captain but we need another big personality
For me, Arsenal have a block, a ingrained sense of weakness, built over the years of lack of trophies, acceptance of mediocrity and being overshadowed by others (Romans Chels, Sheikhs at City). The club needs a big trophy, the league title will get us out of this funk
Back to that squad, whatever happens, some players need to leave. GJ9 is miles off what is required now, he may have 'won' with city but he's not a winner. BW4 is another I'd look at, injuries have ruined his game and we've evolved
🚨 Bayern director Max Eberl on Harry Kane's future: “We will speak to him in the summer”.
“He feels incredibly good. Since his move to FC Bayern, the esteem in which he is held, even in England, has increased dramatically”, told @tzmuenchen.
@FootballEra_ You do realise this is 1. agent touting his name out as he sees that as his job 2. others seeing he isn't playing so driving it, as utd want a left back. 3. Wouldn't move to another side to be a LB. Even if Arsenal were to sell, it will be for a fee that Utd won't pay anyway.
@afcDW Thought this exactly. Yes Eze probs cost their whole squad and wages for a number of years, these are still professionals, feels slightly condescending
@timstillman_ We need to bring that to the Emirates. Our away fans are class, just need that sentiment to spread amongst the 20% of Arsenal fans in the Emirates who are nervous/don't quite get it in certain game states (20% estimated figure 😬)
@HandofArsenal There is no need for this. You are a well respected Twitter account for Arsenal fans. Neville can say what he wants, they way we respond, as Arsenal fans feeds into the narritive being pushed and takes it even further. Big club fans brush it off and laugh at him come June 🏆
@SwedishRumble Elite in the air? Go listen to Ange on the recent overlap and that will tell you that you are potentially incorrect with your assessment (potentially as its a game of opinions)
@afcDW I think we'll see Odergaard, given the stick he has received publicly and on social media over the last few weeks and months. The sort of player that needs to play into form too
This fella is playing football manager 😬 all the best with the fees and players you mention. You need a permanent manager first 😂 and you need champions league not Europe for any sort of outlay. Jim and The Glazers aren't spending 350m 🤭
🔺If we qualify for Europe, do this before 1 September, 2026. This is proper backing — nothing else:
❌Sell Zirkzee to Italy
❌Sell Manuel Ugarte — Carrick not bringing him on for a gassed Mainoo with 5-10 minutes to go yesterday speaks volumes
❌Ship out Bayindir
✅Bring back Radek Vitek from loan at Bristol
✅Sign Nico Schlotterbeck for £50ish million. Used to playing very wide in a back 3, has even played some LWB. Fits perfectly in Shaw’s held back LB role. Actually played a lot as a No 6 before going to Dortmund. We are doomed without Martinez line breaking passes, if Martinez gets injured long term again — it’s too much to rely on Heaven. If Shaw plays 50% of our games the coming 18 months, it’s a miracle. Late bloomer and already 27, but he doesn’t see to be the type who will age poorly.
✅ Sign Carlos Baleba for £70ish million. Poor form? I don’t know, he was optimal in RDZs system, that carried over one season. They are moving away more and more from it. Tough task for Brighton, the kid is still really young. But he has immense potential.
✅Sign Manu Kobe for £50ish million. Extremely press resistant. Great line breaking passing game. Very strong physically. We need two pure No 6s. Been talented forever, but he is 24 now and has had a great season for Roma from the reports. Can’t believe we can get Andersson, and Wharton is not an out and out No 6.
✅Sign Angelo Stiller for £60ish millions. Amazing passer. We talk about United DNA, stiller is a deep lying playmaker and his passing game definitely got a United vibe to it. Opportunistic and aggressive without being wasteful.
✅Sign Yan Diomande from Leipzig for £55ish millions.
✅Sign Julian Alvarez for £80ish millions from Athletico Madrid.
Total spend: Six signings ~£350m
🔺Starting XI is of course a matter of form, but this is two XIs that illustrate each players role:
———————-Sesko———————
Cunha————Bruno—————Amad
—————Maino——-Baleba————
Shaw—-Martinez——Yoro——Mazraoui
——————-Lammens——————-
———————-Alvarez———————
Diomande———Mount———Mbuemo
—————-Kone———Stiller————-
Dorgu——-Schlotb.—-MDL———Dalot
———————-Vitek————————
Depth XI
——————Obi Mikel——————
JJ Gabriel——Fletcher————Lacey
—————-Fletcher—Collyer————
Amass——Heaven—Maguire—Leon (L)
🔺Isn’t it almost too much depth?
After considering it — because it looks a bit much considering what we are used to — it really isn’t. Absolutely not.
Just look around the league — right now City, Liverpool, Newcastle, Tottenham and co all have 5-8 injuries each.
I look at our squad — and I see very few players who can play 90 minutes 2 games a week for a full year. It’s also a World Cup summer, so many of them aren’t getting any breaks. Mbuemo is healthy, play him till he gets a hamstring injury and he could be injury riddled for 5 years. Cunha? Dorgu? MDL? Harry?
Then we have players who are simply too young to play 90 minutes every third day. Mainoo, Baleba. Yoro. Dorgu.
Let’s say we get a couple of long term injuries, Shaw and Mount. Add the baseline 4-5 injuries at any given time all teams playing in Europe almost always have, just randomly say Sesko, Cunha, Dorgu, MDL and Mazraoui are injured for 4 weeks. That is 7 players removed from the 2 XIs above.
Our back 4 would be Schlotb.—Martinez-Yoro-Dalot backed up by only two more defenders, Heaven and Maguire. Those 4 can’t play 90 minutes every 3rd day. Heaven and Maguire would play a lot. Remember — the schedule has never been as tough as it is now.
Up front, for ST, LW, AMC and RW, we would have Alvarez, Diomande, Amad, Mbuemo and Bruno. 5 players for 4 positions. No other back up’s. 8 games x 90 minutes during a 4 week period. If we want to sub two attackers during 1 game — Obi Mikel/Lacey/Gabriel is coming on.
So no — it’s definitely not “luxury depth” in any way, shape or form. Sign 4 players in stead of 6 — and it is simple statistics that we will suffer greatly during a 4-8 week period. The same is the case if our depth is a big downgrade from our starting players.
⚽️All-in-all, I believe that we need at least 1 GK, 1 LB, 2 CDMs, 1 CM, 1 LW and 1 Striker.
7 players — and this does not include upgrades at any existing position.
What does “heavy” recruitment means for United? 3 signings? It won’t be enough, and absolutely not acceptable if we play in Europe next season. I don’t remember the exact data — but I think 15 PL clubs signed 5 or more first team players last summer.
Further, £200-250m is — absolutely — not enough within our wage structure. Anything short of 350-400m is a total disgrace. And even so — if will be tight and we must make some bargain signings.
There must be — riots — if we spend under £350m. Everyone must hold up that standard.
