HAPPY AVATAR AANG MOVIE RELEASE DAY!
this film has come a long way and its filled with love from all of the talented and wonderful people who worked on it! i had the incredible opportunity to help with storyboards and i wouldnt trade it for anything in the world 🥹
please enjoy!
YES. In my undergrad thesis many many years ago, I included lurkers (folks who don't interact much, not even to leave a comment at times, but read fic or look at fanart, edits/fanvids, etc.) because fandom has long seen lurkers as key members of the community.
In fandom, you give what you can give and your participation or role is never something that is set in stone. You can be less active today and more in the future. And so on.
Do not let people make you believe that you have to be "productive" to be seen as a "real fan".
You love the thing and belong to a community. That's all you need to be a fan. Do not lose the fun and whimsy!
I must also point out that BANANA FISH is a DEEPLY political crime thriller that calls out US imperialism, capitalism, corruption, child sexual abuse and trafficking (think Epstein), PSTD, human experimentation, and MORE.
Dubbing with AI is ESPECIALLY ABHORRENT here.
Shame on you @amazon@PrimeVideo.
After years of fans hoping for an English dub of Banana Fish, you give it to us as AI generated garbage?
It’s disrespectful as hell. Was a queer trauma narrative handed to a machine because paying real actors is too hard?
Fix this, or I personally will not work with you as an actor EVER AGAIN on any of your dubs.
This is not ‘the future.’ This is erasure.
the banana fish fandom deserves better. amazon, fix this asap. giving this series the ai slop treatment is the biggest slap in the face ive seen in years.
Anime is more popular than ever. This year alone had two of the highest grossing animated movies to date at the box office — both of which are eligible for Oscar nominations.
Amazon’s choice to use AI to dub Banana Fish is a massive insult to us as performers. AI continues to threaten livelihoods of performers in EVERY language (yes even Japanese performers who are also incredibly vocal on this topic).
Voice Actors deserve the same level of respect as on camera performers. Anime already pays talent very little. Dub production costs shouldn’t make a dent in these companies’ pocket books.
Using AI for a dub of a show that released nearly 8 YEARS AGO AND HAD NO RUSHED SCHEDULE just spits in our faces, has infuriated the consumer, and completely destroys the art.
All they’ve done is make a shitty product and pissed off a lot of people. 🤷
“She Burned Her Thesis to Save Her Mother”: The Story of Nidal, a Sudanese Psychologist Who Survived the Genocide
In a story that captures both the depths of tragedy and the heights of courage, Sudanese psychologist Nidal Shams Eldin Abdullah recounted how she was forced to burn her university graduation thesis to keep her mother alive after fighters from the UAE-backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) shot her in front of her eyes.
“They shot my mother in front of me,” Nidal said, her voice trembling. “Her intestines came out. I tried to put them back, but I couldn’t.” With nothing but her thesis papers left, she set them on fire to create warmth in a desperate attempt to save her mother’s life during the cold rainy season. “It was the only thing I had,” she said. “Everything else was wet.”
After the attack, Nidal carried her wounded mother for days, walking through mud and cold, surviving on nothing but willpower until they reached the Sudan-Chad border. Against all odds, her mother survived.
Once a practicing psychologist, Nidal now lives as a refugee, continuing to help others despite her own deep wounds. “How can a psychologist heal herself in the middle of a war?” she asked softly. Then she added, “All Sudanese are brave. Not just me. There are many braver than I am.”
Her name, Nidal, meaning resistance, fits her story perfectly. She is more than a survivor; she is a symbol of the quiet, unwavering strength of Sudanese civilians, especially women, who have endured the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed).
The suffering caused by the Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) extends far beyond Nidal’s story. Across Darfur, Khartoum, and Al-Jazirah, civilians have faced horrors beyond imagination. Families were slaughtered inside their homes, women and girls were subjected to systematic sexual violence, and men were detained, tortured, and executed in cold blood. Entire neighborhoods were burned to the ground, hospitals looted, and humanitarian convoys attacked, turning cities like El Fasher and El Geneina into fields of ashes and grief. Every testimony tells the same story of deliberate cruelty, proving that what is happening in Sudan is not chaos, but a calculated campaign of terror aimed at breaking the nation’s spirit. Yet voices like Nidal’s remain, standing as living proof that even under the shadow of genocide, the Sudanese people continue to resist with courage, dignity, and unbroken faith.

There are people who fought for your right to exist. And many died for it. We wrote some books to give you history and arm you with skills. I am old and I am safe. By the time you really need me, I'll be dead. Use the work for your fandoms but know where it came from.
