A Young Couple, Ernst Bernhard Marx, 1921.
Painted in 1921, right after a war that killed millions of young men, and Marx paints one of the survivors wrapped completely around a woman like he still can't quite believe he's allowed this. Her body goes slack against his, half in shadow, half lit gold. No faces turned to us, no posed elegance. Just weight, warmth, and the two of them shutting the world out.
