❗️Meta's smart glasses could be banned in Germany and the rest of the EU.

Hamburg data protection commissioner Thomas Fuchs, Meta's lead regulator in Germany, says his office tested the glasses, found the recording LED too easy to miss, and concluded that filming people in public with them breaks data protection law. It is already issuing fines.

His verdict: a camera disguised as an everyday object is illegal to sell or own in Germany. Only the Bundesnetzagentur can order that ban; it is reportedly reviewing.

France's CNIL warned about the whole category in May, and the European Data Protection Board's report on smart glasses is due this summer.

Hey Shai—congrats, you win the award for the most deranged response to the settler attack I experienced and documented. A few notes for you:

(1) I’m a Jewish American journalist, in the West Bank to document settler violence (not a “European agitator there to create conflict.”)

(2) As for the activists, they are explicitly instructed *not* to fight back, let alone provoke conflict, knowing that settlers and soldiers will exact collective punishment on the Palestinians they are there to protect. It’s in the protective presence manuals.

(3) Dozens if not 100+ settlers attacked me, not a “handful of boys.”

(4) Some of those “boys” had long, thick beards.

(4) They had clubs, not “sticks,” as well as guns.

(5) There have been zero Palestinian “terror attacks” in the peaceful community of Turmus’ayya, but near daily settler violence.

(6) Israeli authorities have done nothing to bring the perpetrators to justice.

This morning, an attack carried out by Israeli forces killed Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staff member, Omar Hayek, and seriously injured four others. The attack took place on a street where our teams were waiting to take a bus to the MSF field hospital in Deir al Balah, Gaza. 

All staff were wearing MSF vests, clearly identifying them as medical humanitarian workers.
We express deep sorrow and outrage over the killing, which occurs less than two weeks after another MSF colleague, Hussein Alnajjar, was killed by the Israeli forces, in Deir Al Balah.

Our thoughts are with Omar’s family and colleagues at this tragic time. Omar, 42 years old, is the fourteenth MSF colleague to be killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023.
