I had the opportunity to virtually observe the ongoing trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria. From the outset, it has become glaring that this proceeding has degenerated into what can only be described as a judicial stage play.

The prosecution’s credibility suffered a critical blow when their second witness, identified as BBB, initially told the court he interviewed Mr. Kanu in 2021.

However, under cross-examination, he admitted he has never seen Nnamdi Kanu in his life except during this trial.

As an expert of Shakespearean literature and international law, I can accurately say this trial bears all the hallmarks of irony and absurdity found in Shakespeare’s comedies — notably “Much Ado About Nothing” and “The Comedy of Errors.” But in this instance, the cost is not laughter — it is justice.

Under Commonwealth jurisprudence and international legal standards, this is not a trivial contradiction. It represents a collapse of prosecutorial integrity. To allege a direct interrogation and later concede to never having met the accused is not merely careless — it is judicial misconduct.

This kangaroo trial, targeting a British citizen, is unfolding under a system increasingly seen as hostile to the rule of law. The world is watching. And Britain, the Commonwealth, and democratic partners cannot afford to remain silent.

A Disturbing Geopolitical Context

Of equal concern is the quiet but strategic entry of Scandinavian European actors — notably Finland and Norway — into Nigeria’s economic sectors, particularly in gas and oil. While seeking access to energy resources, these states risk turning a blind eye to grave legal violations against the very principles they espouse.

We caution that no diplomatic or economic partnership should come at the cost of endorsing injustice or ignoring human rights violations in pursuit of natural resources.

Britain Must Act

Should the United Kingdom, which has a duty of care over its citizen Mr. Kanu, continue to ignore these kangaroo tactics, we will escalate the matter to the Old Bailey and appropriate British legal channels.

The trial of a British national in what can only be described as a legal zoo is a matter of both domestic and international concern.

We therefore demand:

An immediate review of the admissibility and credibility of the prosecution’s evidence. International legal observers to monitor proceedings.

The UK Foreign Office and Commonwealth office to publicly affirm that Commonwealth member states must adhere to fair trial standards.
Respect for Mr. Nnamdi Kanu’s full rights under Nigerian, British, and international law.

This is a legal and diplomatic red line.
