"Club championships mask the reality that club leagues are dying on their feet in almost every county. The vast majority of the club season is reduced to a series of glorified challenge games.

"That comes entirely at the behest of inter-county teams who insist on club leagues being finished early enough that their players don’t have to be bothered by them.

"So they’re playing whatever handful of championship games – for most players that’s 3 or 4 – and that’s them."
