your finger
traces our story
along my shoulder’s seam
i feel this rekindling flame
with all the aching
of our ashes
each end
as
each start
our loves last
only when “we” are
willing to die & be reborn
the edge of cold
is slicing nicely through
summer’s tired strings
& the world is red
& yellow
& falling of a sudden
it makes me old enough again
to appreciate the weight
of a blanket’s embrace
especially when winter
with all its woes & wizenings
stands there looking on
i taste the leaves falling
wash away my summer sorrows
with cinnamon & clove
& sing myself into a seaside grove
my heart slows its beat with the seasons
& i love love love without rules or reason
so lay me on an autumn forest’s floor
& i shall be & never want for more
i thought i had
a longing for silence
for the open air of nothingness
the deep pool of stillness
but true silence is illusory
just like total darkness
it is defined only by absence
that lack of something real
when my heart imagines silence
what it hears is not that…
i set out to burn myself
in infinite depths dusty black
tearsome train whistle calling
to summon other flaming souls
in open space specters roamed
shadows tween spinning lights
& on a shanty stoop
kindreds sang & fiddled by flickered wick
playing for water love & smoke
a gift
“this is not the sound of a new man
or crispy realization
it’s the sound of the unlocking
and the lift away
your love will be safe with me”

i pull strands of tomorrow’s promises
candy cotton thin
from the clutches of daydreams
they weave me into a memory
& in a wisp of wonder
i finally forget myself
