Documents tendered in the Federal Court “raised questions about how they attracted students, suggesting they engaged in a practice common to private educators …of targeting students ill-suited to their courses in pursuit of profit.” #stoptafecuts
Really terrific article - the tragedy of “reform” of #TAFE writ large. Dawkins was appointed chair of Vocation when he was already chair of the NSSC - the body responsible for developing the regulation standards Vocation would be subject to. @leesaw2@GavinMoodie @maurie_mulheron
@oz_f@leesaw2@GavinMoodie Per Capita’s 2008 blueprint led to the privat’n of TAFE in Vic then Aust. ‘000,000 students left with huge debt, the sector has been decimated. A generation of young people have born the cost - sustained reinvestment in TAFE needed to rebuild
Fabulous article - a discussion btwn Jim Hordern (U of Bath) and Michael Young (IoE, UCL). Includes the problem of knowledge in vocational curriculum. @JVETjournal

Article by @cap_and_gown and me on why HE should not have a narrow focus on skills
University students aren't cogs in a market. They need more than a narrow focus on 'skills' https://t.co/mbnC0iG0kh via @ConversationEDU
@leesaw2@cap_and_gown@ConversationEDU Terrific piece!
“Education should equip people not just with specific skills, but also with the knowledge they need to be citizens, parents, community members, and for occupations in which they can grow and develop across the course of their lives.”
Completely mad, but circular logic in place since the 1990s. Market isn't working, must be a problem with the market, tweak settings, still doesn't work, tweak some more, still broken? Overhaul settings, still buggered, tweak some more. Repeat. Endlessly
I can't believe that the lessons of the last 30 years are ZERO. Privatisation, loans, private-for-profit providers - led to rorting, funding blow-outs, worthless quals, shocking quality, collapse of trust, TAFE decimated - so let's double down & do it again!
VET in Oz - deregulation, vouchers, expand loans - what could possible go wrong? Oh, sorry, we aren't in 2008, this is 2020. We've learnt nothing. "Governments challenged to shake up 'Byzantine' vocational education system https://t.co/H260zoiV28 via @smh
@leesaw2@TAFEeducation@TAFEdefender@TafeDirectors@TAFECampaign@GavinMoodie There are contradictory calls for more regulation to facilitate expansion of student loans, and less regulation to facilitate ... “responsiveness” to business. A doubling down on the sector becoming just a crude (and impossible) bandaid for skills shortages in the economy
@leesaw2@TAFEeducation@TAFEdefender@TafeDirectors@TAFECampaign@GavinMoodie PC report offers no genuine assessment of why the sector is in crisis, ignoring the decades of underfunding and ideological tinkering by governments, and doubling down on the tired mantra of the need to become more responsive to business ...
Great piece detailing the terrible impact of an ideological obsession with markets, and governments’ contempt for public vocational education in TAFE. Young peoples’ trust in the sector has been destroyed - society will suffer for this
Millions spent chasing dodgy vocational colleges, tens of millions of dollars in penalties remain unpaid, former students & taxpayers still suffer. The impact of the defunct VET FEE HELP loan rort continues https://t.co/uGuQwl0Ks2 via @theage#auspol
Thankyou @SenatorDoug for all you have done for workers, and for standing up for TAFE. Watch Doug’s last speech sometime after 6 tonight https://t.co/NQzl0EK3Id @rosieanice @maurie_mulheron @TAFEeducation@TAFEdefender
