Most new writers query too early.
The manuscript isn't rigorously edited. They don't fully understand their genre. They haven't nailed their pitch.
And they burn through their entire agent list wondering why no one is biting.
Before you make the same mistake, ask yourself honestly...is your manuscript REALLY ready to query?
With a decade of editing and hundreds of manuscripts under my belt, I've compiled a list of the 7 signs your manuscript isn't ready to publish yet.
This isn't meant to discourage you, but to empower you to put the absolute BEST version of your book in front of agents.
It's tough out there, and I want you to give it your best shot!

Query inbox update:
March queries & before are in my maybe pile, getting through fulls slowly but surely!
May: about halfway done with responses, some in the maybe pile
June: on the first comb-through
💖☺️
Audio has quickly become a huge passion spot within the industry (167% increase in audio readers in the US in the past decade!!!) and I can't wait to bring the endless hours of knowledge and resources I have obtained to my agency colleagues!
Excited to say that I will be attending the Louisville Book Festival on Saturday 10/24 and taking 10-minute pitches! You can register for a session with me at the following link: https://t.co/IuSDe40qhb
Hello all, a quick note to let you all know I'm no longer agenting, lots of personal things happening in life, so I need to switch my focus. I'll still be around and I'm rooting so hard for my clients to find their perfect representation match, as well as rooting for you all!🥰
I’m seeing a trend of very long query letters. Please aim for ~350 words or less. I promise this is all you need 🙏🏻 #writingcommunity#amwriting#amquerying
Welp, the scammers are pretending to be me now, too. 😔 Two people just reached out to ask whether an email using my name and logo from an official sounding Gmail address was actually me. Friends, I will only ever use my official Fuse Literary email, so please be careful!
I’m seeing a lot of authors have trouble with editors lately, and it hurts my heart.
Here are some red flags in editors:
-Lack of website or social media for their services
-Lack of testimonials from other authors or unwillingness to share previous clients

So excited to have been invited to participate in the first ever in person live literary agent pitch event at the Louisville Book Festival! Bidding for all 20 spots starts on May 30th! See y’all soon!
Hi All. I'm closing to unsolicited queries tomorrow (reopening date TBD). If you aren't ready to query today, you can share your work with one of my excellent Folio colleagues. Meet them here: https://t.co/VVFCIxg7LM
Reminder that I'm reopening to queries for the first week of April! (this coming Monday 6/1-6/7) #amwriting#amquerying#writingcommunity
Here’s what I’m looking for: https://t.co/vm7YTABA2G
A question I often find myself asking when reading queries is "Why?" Why these characters, why that disaster, why that journey. Please make sure you answer the why's in the queries to me thank you so much!
Which means... I'll be opening June 1st!
It’s come to my attention that someone is impersonating me with a fake email address, asking authors to submit work. While I’m flattered that someone thinks I’m important enough to impersonate, please do not reply to any email address that doesn’t match the Spencerhill website!
*whispers* I will finally be opening for queries after almost a year of being closed. My query inbox will be open June 1st-15th and July 1st-15th. If you’re interested in what I’m looking for, check out my new #MSWL.
This week on Substack: insight from my submissions inbox! Here are three common reasons I turn down manuscripts, and how you can fix your own work: https://t.co/sLDQBNDZcA
Since becoming a literary agent, I have offered to represent 4 writers. I found them through 1. MG Hub pitch, 2. Writer friend referral, 3. Agent referral (mentor passed a manuscript to me that I loved in her requests), 4. My slush pile (Query Tracker). #amagenting
