India’s entire R&D spending as a country is barely around ~$15–20 billion annually. Meanwhile:

Google spends ~$45B+

Microsoft spends ~$30B+

China spends hundreds of billions every year on research, semiconductors, AI, defence and manufacturing.

Even our biggest companies:

Reliance Industries → ~0.4% of revenue on R&D

TCS → ~1% of revenue on R&D

Compare that with US tech giants spending 10–25% of revenue on innovation.

And then people seriously say India will become “Vishwaguru”.

Reality is harsh: We are still a low R&D, low innovation, service driven economy heavily dependent on foreign technology, foreign chips, foreign operating systems, foreign AI models and foreign capital.

China built manufacturing dominance through decades of massive investment in science, engineering and industrial capability. The US dominates because its companies spend absurd amounts on research and innovation every single year.

Meanwhile in India, political discourse is stuck in caste equations, freebies, religion fights and social media propaganda while real investment in research, deep tech and scientific capability remains tiny.

At this pace, forget competing with the US or China even after 100 years it will remain difficult unless India radically changes its priorities.
