I'll still be around, watching the #elonShow, and hoping that the mass exodus somehow stops and we avoid this massive community loss and fracture that seems to be underway.... hugs to all that read this
Now, because of the #elonShow, we are in the process of losing a community and a means to connect with so many others. I hope at some point I join and rebuild something similar to this, but for now, thank you SO MUCH for all you have given me, and sorry I didn't give more ❤️❤️
Despite not having actively participated much in recent years, the #academicTwitter community was also incredible for finding cool jobs, papers, people.
Welp, I'm coming out in case it all dissapears. Thanks to the twitter community, I discovered I was #actuallyautistic, I was able to get through a chronic mysterious illness #NEISVoid and I was able to follow news of my home country whenever media went dark #Venezuela
The twitter community (not the platform) gave me context, life, reason, and direction. And without it, I have no doubt many parts of me would not be here today. I am a better and happier person because of this community.
A very nice article, and an outstanding collaborative team! Thank you Nick for the great lead on this article, which explores hunting effects on viral transmission among pumas in the wild, using both viral and host genomics and modelling.
We made the front cover of Nature Ecology and Evolution! Read about how puma M87 and others were involved in the transmission of a retrovirus (and how hunting may have played a role). https://t.co/XKJ9eDVpPz
Some of the reasons why academia in latin america is so far behind compared to other regions: complete lack of planning, constant improvisation, and no respect for others' schedules and time. The culture needs to change, and it starts with us.
#frustrada#cansada
I invite all my male and female colleagues to do a self-check and self-reflect: have I ever though of a woman as brilliant? Have I ever used the word "genius" towards a person who isn't male? The answer may be uncomfortable, but necessary for growth.
"The problems of misogynist PIs and tepid reference letters may stem from the same root: the widespread assumption that only men can be brilliant."
As a PI, I constantly face micro-agressions from colleagues, all stemming from: "she can't be that smart." https://t.co/0iCOlgG1TV
There is no doubt that scientific progress relies in large part on natural history observations that may initially seem trivial or irrelevant. As tropical ecologists, what kinds of natural history observations do you think are valuable enough to merit visibility?
