I now understand the significance of this movement.

The American Revolution of 1775 scared the fuck out of the King and the British elite. They watched in horror as their prized colonies ripped away in a bloody uprising, transformed into a republic, and build a system that put power in the hands of the people instead of the Crown.

That trauma shaped everything that came after, especially when it came time to organize the remaining British holdings in North America. So when the push for Confederation hit here in the 1860s, the British North America Act was deliberately crafted to keep real power locked with the Crown and prevent any repeat of that revolutionary nightmare south of the border. The Governor General, the King's direct representative, holds the authority to dissolve Parliament, reserve or disallow legislation, and the infamous "peace, order, and good government" clause lets the federal government override provinces whenever it deems necessary. Some argue that those modern powers are symbolic, but we know they are not.

Provinces get limited powers, always subordinate, never truly sovereign. The whole structure is top-down, centralized control dressed up as federation, designed to smother any grassroots rebellion before it starts.

The more recent 1982 Charter looks like progress on paper, but it's rigged. Rights are subject to "reasonable limits" enforced by appointed judges, and governments can simply invoke the notwithstanding clause to override them entirely. That's not freedom, it's conditional permission from the state, revocable at will.

Canadians remain subjects in a constitutional monarchy, not citizens with unalienable rights. No real break from the Crown's authority, no path to genuine self-rule without the system's blessing.

This is why Alberta independence is non-negotiable now. We're tired of being drained through equalization payments, crippled by federal energy strangulation, overloaded with immigration and taxes we never voted for, all while Ottawa clings to Crown-derived powers that were never meant to serve us. Shit, they even brought out the King last year, do lecture us from the Throne and remind ou that we're a sovereign nation.

A free Alberta breaks those chains completely. No more Crown figurehead, no federal veto hanging over our heads, no monarchy dictating our destiny from across the ocean.

We'll form a republic where power truly belongs to the people of this province, built on real self-determination and accountability. Alberta independence is the fight to finally achieve what the British system was engineered to deny... actual freedom.

The petition is gaining ground, the anger is real, and we're pushing forward until it becomes reality.

My dad is 68. Used to farm. Now he's fighting colon cancer.
