My colleague and I left $20 on a $309 bill at a Michelin star restaurant last night, and the waitress looked at us like we’d just insulted her grandmother.We split it—$10 from me, $10 from her. For context: I always tip. 💵
20% minimum, and more when the service is good. I’ve worked in service jobs before, so I fully understand how important tips are.

But yesterday I walked up to a restaurant and saw a large sign taped to the front window:

📝 “Our servers make $3.50/hr... If you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to dine out.”

I read it, paused, and decided to turn around and leave. 🚶‍♂️

Here’s why:

I’m happy to reward good service. 👍
I’m not comfortable being guilt-tripped before I’ve even seen a menu, met a server, or placed an order.

The message didn’t feel like:
⭐ “Please support our hardworking staff.”
⭐ “Great service is appreciated and rewarded.”

Instead, it came across more like:
💰 “Cover our labor costs or don’t eat here.”

At some point, isn’t paying employees a fair wage the responsibility of the business owner? 🤷‍♂️

I didn’t leave because I refuse to tip.
I left because I don’t like being pressured into tipping before any service has even happened. 😒

Tipping should feel like appreciation for a good experience—not a condition just to walk through the door.
