Yesterday, Trump declared a national emergency over the power grid. People are concerned it's a setup to take the grid down. That's where we are at with trust in our government. So let's look at what it actually is, how it WOULD help a grid takedown if that's the goal, and whether it really looks like that's what's happening.

WHAT THIS ORDER IS

Most people don't know this, I didn't until I researched it, but he already signed this same order, almost word for word, back in 2020. That version expired in 2021 when nobody bothered to renew it. So this isn't new. The 2026 version just has teeth the old one didn't, and some sharp ones.

Here's what did NOT change: both versions hand the whole thing to one person, the Energy Secretary. One office making every call. That's not the new part, but it's the part that caught my eye.

What changed is what that one office is allowed to DO. In 2020 it could look at foreign equipment and suggest changes. Now it can force it out, order gear that's already plugged in and running to be shut down and torn out, and pull a company off the approved-seller list whenever it wants, with no appeal.

IF I WANTED TO SET THE GRID UP TO GO DARK, HERE'S THE PLAYBOOK

(based on how real grid attacks have actually worked)

1. I wouldn't build an off switch, I'd just put myself in charge of who's allowed to touch the equipment, and never let go. → This order does that.

2. I'd leave the risky foreign equipment plugged in and control the software updates. In 2024 a Chinese company remotely shut off a batch of solar equipment in the US. Not a hack, they just flipped it off from overseas. That ability is already sitting inside the country. → A separate rule this summer lets that equipment keep running but cuts off its security updates in 2029. So it doesn't fix the danger. It freezes it.

3. I'd make sure nothing can be replaced quickly. Tax the parts, keep only one American company making the critical piece, let wait times stretch to three years. → Already true today.

4. I'd never actually cut the power. I'd just have my story ready to blame someone else. → This order writes that story in advance: an official statement that foreigners are sabotaging the grid, a secret target list that goes to the President's security advisor instead of Congress, and records the public isn't allowed to see.

WHY I DON'T THINK THAT'S THE PLAN

Watch how Trump actually uses this stuff.

- In early 2025 he declared an energy emergency, then used a different law 48 times to force power plants to STAY ON. When he wants something from the grid, he keeps it running, not off.

- He pushed his emergency powers so hard on tariffs that the Supreme Court slapped him down 6-to-3 in February. He'll stretch a law, but the courts have been catching him.

- And the real break-in already happened. Chinese government hackers have been hiding inside US utility systems since 2021. They got in through internet equipment, not power equipment. So this order is aimed at the wrong door.

SO WHAT IS IT, THEN?

My guess: it's about money.

Strip away the scary language and this looks like a shopping law. It decides which companies are allowed to sell the equipment that runs America's electricity. Whoever the Energy Secretary blesses gets the business. Whoever he doesn't is locked out. That's billions of dollars in contracts handed to one office, with no rules and no appeal. I'm going to dig into who's getting those contracts next.

Why do I land on money instead of blackouts? Because it fits his pattern. This administration keeps stamping "national security" on things that are really just an insider getting paid. In fact, he just ran this exact play with Argentina.

THE ARGENTINA TELL

The story we were told there was "help an ally." Trump's Treasury put together a multibillion-dollar financial rescue for Argentina and its president, Javier Milei, and opened the US market to cheap Argentine beef.

Here's what that story left out. One of Milei's biggest backers is American billionaire Peter Thiel, a major Trump donor. Thiel helped fund Milei's rise, has sat down with him privately, and has personally sunk $76 million into Argentine energy companies.

So when the US government stepped in to "rescue an ally," it was also propping up a country a top Trump donor is heavily invested in. Meanwhile American cattle ranchers got undercut in their own market by that cheap beef. The insiders came out ahead. Congress is now demanding to know who profited.

So it would look something like that. "Help an ally" on the beef deal works exactly like "national security" on this grid order. It's their disguise, but if you peel back the BS, it's always about money with this administration.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR IF THEY DO ABUSE THIS

Two things.

(1) The contracts: Watch which companies suddenly get approved to sell grid equipment, and who owns them. That's where a "national security" order turns into a payday.

(2) And this is the serious one, watch for a claimed attack. There's a 2015 law that's the real "grid emergency" button, and it only switches on AFTER someone says an attack already happened. It has never once been used. If they reach for that one, ignore everything I said above, because we're in real trouble.

So, in the end, this order can't turn off your power. There's no off switch in it. What it CAN do is decide who's in control when something goes wrong, and hand that control to one person, in private, with no one checking.

That's my real concern. It's not a blackout, but a power grab, and a payday. Because if the lights ever do go out, the same office that caused it gets to decide what happened, who did it, and when they come back on.
